STRAND
LAST DAYS OF “LOVE PARADE” “The Love Parade,” featuring the popular Maurice Chevalier, is now in its fourth week at the Strand Theatre. Chevalier is cast as Count Alfred, who is recalled from an embassy in Paris to a mythical kingdom •in Europe. Here lie succeeds in winning the affections of his queen and they are married. Tiring of taking orders from his royal wife he mutinies, but is forced to keep up appearances while the queen is trying to negotiate a loan from a foreign Power. A climax comes on the opening night of the Royal Opera and a divorce is narrowly averted. Finally Maurice Chevalier is accepted as king as well as prince consort. Jeanette MacDonald gives an excellent rendering of the part of the queen, while. Lupino Lane as the count’s valet, and Lillian Roth, as the queen’s maid, supply a strong comic element. Shorter films complete the programme. Jack Buchanan, the English stage star who plays with Irene Bordoni in “Paris,” the First National Vitaplione picture, coming shortly to the Strand Theatre, is known as the best-dressed Englishman on the stage today. Buchanan’s wardrobe, which he wears in the picture, was taken to America from London when he made a non-stop trip to Hollywood in order to arrive there in time to start the picture. “Paris” is adapted from the stage play of that name by Martin Brown, and was directed by Clarence Badger Jack Buchanan, the English stage favourite, plays opposite Miss Bordoni and the cast includes Jason Robards, Louise Closser Hale, Margaret Fielding and Zasu Pitts.
