GT. AUTUMN HANDICAP
SPOON TAKES CLASSIC T fc Special to THE SU A CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Under typically autumn conditions the Canterbury Jockey Club concluded its Kaster carnival at liiccurton today. Again there was a fairly large attendance and the track was in excellent order. Gay Crest won the (Treat Autumn Handicap after a thrilling finish, beating Merry Dnmon on the post by a short head. After the race T. Green, rider of Merry -Damon, lodged an objection against Cay Crest on the grounds that he interfered with him soon after the start and so cost him the race. It was a trivial objection, however, ami the stewards lost little time in dismissing it. The t ota lisa tor handled £31,191. making £81,222 for the meeting, a:i increase of £6,145. Peerswick Hurdles Curinthia was responsible for a striking reversal of form when lie won the Peerswick Hurdles. He finished wc'l duivn the course, but today he finished strongly from the home turn to beat Troilus by half a length. Apparently the public was not prepared for his forward running, for he was allowed to go out paying a big dividend. Antrim Boy looked to have a good chance lou yards from home, but Troilus cut him out of second place over the closing stages. Taramoa and .Mime were responsible for the fast pace early, but to such an extent was Taramoa's pace ravaged in the first 10 furlongs that he was a beaten horse at the false rail. Aberfeldy carried heavy support, but he jumped poorly and came to grief at the fence near the six-furlong post. Diana’s Bad was badly interfered with when Aberfeldy fell and that put him out of the contest. Auturpn Nursery The bracketed pair, pzone and Ilkley, dominated the betting on the Autumn Nursery Handicap, and this pair tilled first and second places respectively. Sleipner soon singled himself out and was responsible for Hie early pace. Half a furlong from home ho looked a distinct possibilitv, but Ozone and Ilkley both passed him over the last 100 yards, the former beating his stable mate by half a length. Kakara finished strongly in third place, and of the others Sleipner did best. Ozone Is a two-year-old son of Saltash (sire of Strephon) from Aries, .iml was purchased as a yearling by Mr. G. D. Greenwood. He is a fine amp of youngster, and now that he has struck form he may continue to do well in future engagements. Ilkley, a sister to Pride, finished stoutly, and as it was her first appearance she is certain to make improvement. Valdh urst Handicap By winning the Yaldhurst Handicap. Starshooter compensated his new owner, Mr. J. Bundy, for the 300 guineas he paid for the gelding at Mr. C. G. Dalgety’s dispersal sale at Addington this morning. Always prominent. Starshooter drew out in the run down the straight, to beat Glenrowan by a length. The Bailiff -was a similar distance away third, and then came Lucky Light. When Lucky Light led into the straight, it appeared as if she might win, hut she lugged out badly over the last furlong, taking The Bailiff with her, and so r«^oiled the latter’s chance. But for this. The Bailiff might have been very difficult to beat. Honeycomb was slow to move, and although ho ran into a prominent position before the home turn was reached, he was a beaten horse over the last furk>ng. Addington Handicap Paris, who ran a great race yesterday. finished strongly to win the Addington Handicap. He was never tar away, and though The Viscount looked to have the measure of the opposition a l'urlong from home, Paris came away very determinedly under' pressure to beat the Riccarton horse by a length. Netley was well back early, but was flying at the end in third place. Hounslow ran an excellent race, only fading over the last 50 yards, and Ranelagh did best of the others.
Paris, who carries the colours of the well-known Southland sportsman, Mr. W. T. Hazlett, won convincingly, and it is evident that the course of schooling he had has increased his pace on the flat.
R. Coveny, Paris’s rider, was suspended for the remainder of the day for crossing Miss Nightraid. The Great Autumn
Latin Quarter made the pace in the stages of the Great Autumn, but soon after turning for homo he was hotly pursued by Gay Crest. A furlong from the post Gay Crest quickly set up a two-lengths lead, and battling out the finish like a game racehorse, held his place to win by a narrow margin amid tremendous enthusiasm.
It was a stylish performance, and the indications are that Gay Crest will go on improving.. He might even be 11 Zealand Cup proposition in the spring. Merry Damon had every chance, a slow-run race suiting him to a nicety. But despite this advantage, he failed to catch Gay Crest. Arikiwai was the unlucky runner of the race. He was ridden a shocking race, and there can be few doubts that he would have pulled off the prize had he been hand It'd judiciously. Historic found his w’eight too great, and Paquito did not perform nearly so well as he did on Monday. Latin Quarter ran a great race into fourth Place, but Seatown and Red Heckle were both disappointments. Challenge Stakes Spoon was purchased this morning by Mr. George Payne, of Christchurch, lor 750 guineas, and the filly was not long in winning her new owner a race, for she scored a brilliant win in the Challenge Stakes, beating Charmaine by a neck. Lineage was a moderate third, and Stealth did best of the others. Charmaine was made much use of early, but Spoon beat Iler squarely in the run home. Papanui Hack •lust An Idea was too good for the opposition in the Papanui Handicap, beating Sapient and Lord Thomond decisively. She is a brilliant hack, a nd should win in much better cortiPany before long. Bay Queen, who races in the same interests at Xightmarch, did best of the remainder. Templeton Handicap First Sight was a strong favourite for the Templeton Handicap, but lie laded to run better than second. His riard race in the Great Easter having taken a lot out of him. Te Awhina shot to the front at the distance, and finished very stoutly to win by two lengths. Great Star was a close third. With Panther best of the others.
