Odds to the third of a century wa? the price Ellerslie trainer W. Hawkins was receiving when Gay Cockade beat everything but Tenakoe in the Nelson Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday. He was not sighted early, but improved his position with such good effect that he was handy to the leaders coming into the home stretch. Gay Cockade finished on really well, but met a hack better than the average. Now that the 'Son of Depredation is showing a return to form, he will attract some attention at the Avondale meeting, for he is a smart galloper at his best. Feeling the Pinch.—The depression in Australia was reflected in the Easter holiday traffic at Sydney. The railway and tramway revenue in New Soutn Wales shows a decrease of £17.000 for the holiday period, compared with Easter. The racing clubs also are feeling the pinch and may reduce their stakes.
