OUTBOARD RACING
SPEED IN SOUTH ISLAND The initial attempt at holding ai; annual outboard motor-boat championship regatta for the South Island was made at Akaroa on Saturday, the venture being justified by the number of entries received from all over .few Zealand. The day was ideal for the purpose, practically a dead calm prevailing throughout the regatta. The regatta was controlled by the Canterbury Outboard Motor-Boat Club. The Gougli Cup for the* two fastest boats from B, C and D classes, was won by Play Boy. This race was the first of its kind in New Zealand, anci the most / exciting of the day. The results were: B CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP, three heats of 4 miles each. Final Points.—Ajax, 1,200, 1: Seahorse, 974, 2; Miss Audrey, 801, 3; Heck, 770, 4. Other points scored were: Country Boy (722) 5, C Bird (645), 6, Babs (421) 7, fc i Revoir (421) 7, Musketeer (335) 9, ili Speed (144) 10. C CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP, three heats ol’ 4 miles each. Final Points.—Pitapat 1,161, 1; Miss Texaco, 904, 2; Play Boy, 761, 3. Other points scored were: Baby Boy 655, Sea r horse 289, Miss Brooklands 225. D CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP, three heats of 4 miles each. First Heat.—Humbug (L. Stericker. Auckland), time 6.42, 1; Miss Joan (P. Williamson), 6.52, 2; Whoopee (CL S. Collins) 6.58, 3: Merry Moments (F. J. Collins). 7.25, 4. Second Heat.—Merry Moments, 6.10, 1: Miss Joan, 6.28, 2; Whoopee, 6.53, 3. Humbug picked up kelp .and had to retire. Third Heat. —Merry Moments, G. 7. 1: Humbug, G. 27, 2; Whoopee, 6.49, 3. Play Boy, 7.19. 4. Final Points.—Merry Moments, I.OSO. 1: Miss Joan, 1,011, 2; Whoopee, 972. 3: Humbug, 761. 4. In the second lap of the final heat Merry Moments did 39.77 miles an hour over the two miles, the time being 3.1. CLUB RELAY RACE, distance 6 miles, one lap a. boat. Ajax. Musketeer, Pitapat and Merry Moments. 1; Miss Audrey, Country Bov, Miss A, and Humbug, 2; C Bird. Au Revoir. Texaco and Miss Joan, 3; Seahorse, Babs, Play Boy and "Whoopee, 4. GOUGH CUP HANDICAP, for two boats which registered fastest times in each class. Three heats of one mile, each boat to be handicapped after each race. First Heat.—Humbug (4sec) 1- Plav Boy (l4sec), 2; Pitapat (ISsec), 3. Seahorse 24sec, Ajax 17sec, anu Merry Moments scr, also started. Second Heat.—Play Bov, 1: Ajax 2* Humbug, 3. ‘ Third Heat.—Seahorse, 1; Play Bov, Humbug, 3. Final.—Play Boy 1; Humbug, 2; Seahorse, 3.
