WOMEN’S FINAL PLAYED MISS M. SHERRIS IN FORM *. Much firmer courts allowed brighter tennis to be played in the final of the New Zealand University women’s singles at Stanley Street this afternoon. Miss M. Sherris’s (Canterbury) brisk driving took the first set easily to 6 —l from Miss Ruth TJ.yior (Auckland). Playing her stroKC3 beautifully, Miss Sherris forced the Auckland girl to make several awkward returns. Miss Taylor improved her placements, and Look a game only after her opponent had won four games very easily. Miss Sherris won the next two games and the set by excellent - low driving. Miss Sherris outclassed her opponent in the second set, and won the match, 6 — l, 6 — l. Miss Taylor ran her opponent to deuce three times in the fourth set. and then, fighting pluckily, won a game. ROUSING DOUBLES Rousing play gave the Auckland pair, A. IJ. McDonald and Miss N. Whitelaw. a win in the first set of the final of the combined doubles. 6 —4, from J. Beatson and Miss M. Sherris. In the third game of the set Miss Whitelaw broke down a stiff attack by Beatson. but the Canterbury pair, mainly by the fine play of Miss Sherris, pulled the game out of the fire. The other games of the set were remarkable for excellent volleying. Auckland took the lead at the third game and was trailed by Canterbury for the remainder of the set. Results: WOMEN'S SINGLES. Miss M. Sherris * (Canterbury) beat Miss R. Taylor (Auckland). 6—l. 6—l.
