EMPRESS, NEWTON
“Under tHe Greenwood Tree,” a British talking picture based on Thomas Hardy’s well-known novel, is now being presented at the Empress Theatre. Newton. John Batten, an Auckland actor, plays the leading part in this picture, which is remarkable for its scenes in an old world English village and its folk songs and dances. Music is supplied by an old village instrumental choir of the type that existed in village churches before the era of American organs. Bright supporting items complete a splendid programme.
Kay Francis, a fashionable screen player, forsakes vamp roles for an intensely human one in “Street of Chance,” William Powell’s new alltalking drama. Miss Francis plays the neglected, loving wife of the gambler, Powell, in the production.
Filming on Paramount's all-talkin'-' version of “The Spoilers” is scheduled to start this month at the Hollywood studios. - George Bancroft is to be starred and Betty Compson will have the feminine iead.
