BANNISTER BOWLS WELL HALF-CENTURY TO WHITELAW Special to THE SUN" WELLINGTON, Monday. Auckland University won the Speight Trophy for the first time today when it defeated Victoria College by six wickets on the Basin Reserve. The home side’s batting had no backbone today after Aim and Osborne had carried the overnight score from 44 for four wickets to 85 for five, and the Victorian men were scratching badly. Paetz, for instance, batted 50 minutes for 12 runs. Bannister and Matheson kept the batsmen very quiet, Auckland’s fielding was very keen and many runs were saved by useful work in the country. Save Aim and Osborne, who made 33 apiece, none of the local men “came off,” and Auckland was left with only 114 to get. The opening was bad, Lunn going lbw when the side was still young, but Bannister and Whitelaw put on 80 for the second wicket and played sound, aggressive cricket. Bannister covered himself with glory, but unfortunately had to retire after stealing a short run, as he developed leg trouble, having strained a cartilage in his knee in the field that morning. He had taken four wickets for 9 runs, and Matheson gained six for 61. Whitelaw played a sound innings and was never troubled, being unbeaten for 54 runs. “We met a better side, and that was all there was to it,” said the Wellington captain after the match.
