EATING MORE BUTTER
LOW PRICES SWELL DEMAND LONDOX, Saturday. The lower retail prices for New Zealand and Australian butter (Is 2d to Is 4d a lb) now ruling all over Britain have had the effect of materially increasing consumption, and have brought about a better tone. The wholesale market this week has shown » recovery of a shilling or two from last week’s depressed level. It is hoped that consumption will continue to expand, but the statistical IK)sition does not appear to be promising. Stocks in cold storage in London have been steadily accumulating lor some time past. It is estimated now that the amount is about 16,500 tons, without the stocks in private stores. In addition to this large quantity in England, the cold-stored stocks in New Zealand at the end of March were 14,300 tons, so that although the quantities afloat from Australia are less than a year ago, there is a prospect oC heavy supplies for some time. In these circumstances, importers are by no means optimistic about the future. The cheese position is more hopeful, with good demand. Prices have recovered about 4s a cwt, and with the approach of summer, consumption may be expected to improve.
