EGYPT’S TREASURES
GOVERNMENT SAYS NONE MUST LEAVE FURTHER EXCAVATIONS LONDON, Saturday. Not one of the treasures Mr. Howard Carter found in Tutankhamen’s tomb will be brought to England. It had been hoped that the British Museum might obtain something in recognition of the fact that an Englishman discovered the tomb, but Mr. Carter, who is at present in London, says the Egyptian Government has decided that nothing must leave Egypt. It is to make a monetary settlement which Mr. Carter expects will be favourable. Wonders greater than those found in the tomb of Tutankhamen are likely to be revealed if Mr. Carter succeeds in his attempt to discover the tomb and gold coffin of Alexander the Great in Alexandria. He says an effort to locate and explore that tomb will be made after the completion of his work at Tutankhamen’s tomb, when the Egyptian excavation season opens iu October. He anticipates a long, difficult and expensive quest. The main difficulty will be the location of the burial spot- Owing to the fact that Alexandria is so much overbuilt the preliminary work will consist of sinking tubes by which means Mr. Carter hopes to strike the tombs of lesser dignitaries, which spread in a wide circle, and gradually to work to the centre, where it was * the custom to bury Royal personages. This will be the most important excavation work ever undertaken in Egypt.
