WAS SCOTT FOULED?

FIGHT MOVIE IS CUT AS BLOW IS STRUCK CRITICS INCENSED LONDON, March 30. The showing of the film of the Scott-Sharkey fight has swung the American critics’ opinion in favour of Scott, according to the “Sunday Express” and “Sunday Times’” correspondents. The “Sunday Express” correspondent states that the film does not show the blow felling Scott in the third round. Sharkey is seen poised to deliver the punch. Then there is a sudden cutout, after which Scott is shown on the floor. The “Sunday Times” correspondent says that the slow-motion film clearly shows that Sharkey hit Scott low three times. The fight will probably result in a new- rule against a punch to the groin. The punch which put the sciatic nerve on the map looks merely one of the harmless low shots no boxer can help landing, and, as it avoids the obviously vulnerable regions, does not alarm the referee, who dislikes a decision on a foul as much as the crowd. But if you doubt the efficacy of this blow, just hold your leg stiff and whack yourself in the groin. Here is Tom Webster’s picture of Sharkey: “I have seen fighters in the agony of defeat shed tears. but Sharkey simply threw his gloves to his face and emitted one long howl. Even when declared the winner, this man-eater, unsatisfied, leapt about his corner to a dervish dance of his own design, and then ran across and insulted the helpless Scott.”
