SCIENTISTS GAOLED FOR COMPLICITY NO DEATH PENALTIES United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 12.5 p.m. KHAROV, Sunday. As the result of the trial of 45 intel lectuals three were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment and 33 to shorter terms. Nine w€ire released. The opinion is expressed that because no death sentence verdict was inflicted, thousands of intellectuals will support the Soviet. It is understood that the Soviet is reappointing many of the accused, who are leading scientists. The defendants in this action are charged with engineering a counter revolution. It is alleged that the 45 accused persons were the ringleaders in a conspiracy to free the Ukraine from the yoke of the Soviet. They are charged with preparing for an armed revolt in the coming spring and with discussing plans to assassinate Stalin, general secretary of the Communist Party, and Voroshiloff, Commissar of tlie Army and Navy. It is stated that the accused received funds for their purpose from Poland and from Russians in Paris and Berlin. Professor Serge Jefremow, head of the Ukrainian Academy of Science, is accused of being the leader of the conspirators and of using the academy as headquarters.
