Trotting Cup to Logan’s Pride

SPORT AT HAWERA NGAHUIA WINS THE MILE Special to THE SUN HAWERA, Today. j The Hawera Trotting; Club’s Easter 1 fixture opened on Saturday in dull but ! lino weather. There was a good atj tendance and the track was in splendid order. The machine handled £17,650, .against .£ 18,527 on the first day last ! year. The racing was keen with ex- , citing finishes in many events. C. Humphries, driver of Harold Logan, was fined £5 for flourishing his whip when winning the Stratford Handicap. Eeo Berkett, who was injured when he fell from his sulky before the Xormanby Handicap, was taken to hospital, but his injuries are not serious. Aurora Handicap Bee Nelson, nicely handled by Bill Head, won the Aurora Handicap in fine style. Cogent, Drift Wave and Eeo Nelson began best and led past the stand from Matchmaker, Myrtle Dillon, Highland Derby and Oliver Thorpe and along the back the favourite made a forward move to third berth, while Lee Nelson assumed a slight lead. Approaching the straight Matchmaker, Drift Wave, Highland Derby and Myrtle Dillon were handy. Lee Nelson finished best to get a clear length decision over the favourite, Capilano, who lost a lot of ground at the start, being two lengths back third. Then in a bunch came Highland Derby, Myrtle Dillon and Oliver Thorpe. Matapu Handicap Bessie Bingen, a good favourite for the Matapu Handicap, refused to strike a start and never threatened danger. ! Toy Ride was an early leader, but broke lat the end of half a mile, leaving | Caballero in charge, with Laurier and ; Nelson Parrish making up ground. ! Along the back Nelson Parrish ran up to Caballero, the latter breaking badly coming along the top. Berkett was well clear at the home turn from Joy Ride and Rangitero, with Brian Bingen coming up fast. Nelson Parrish went on to win by 10 lengths from i Brian Bingen, who beat Rangitero by | two lengths for second place, with Joy . Ride, Laurier and Caballero next. Stratford Handicap Harold Logan was first choice for the Stratford Handicap and after waiting on the leaders to the home turn he came away to win easily. Modern Light went out quickly to lead at the end of half a mile from Good j Lady, Rangihau, Harold Logan and Nathaniel and along the back Good Lady collared the leader and together they entered the straight just ahead of Rangihau, Harold Logan and Nathaniel. Once in line for the judge the favourite came away on the outer to win easily by three lengths from Rangihau, who was two in front of .Modern Light. Then came Nathaniel, Good Lady arid Warrenore. Hawera Cup Royal Silk, the Cup favourite, was badly stopped at the start by All Red, who tangled and swerved. Logan’s Pride, confidently driven by D. Watts, came through at the finish to score a popular win. Hilltop was first out, from Gang Awa and Tumatakuru, and with half a mile reached in 1.10 their nearest attendants were El Direct, Logan’s Pride and Hostess. At the mile post (2.20) Hilltop was still showing the way to Tumatakura, Gang Awa, El Direct and Logan’s Pride, with Enawah and Warplane in handy positions. When the mile and a-half was reached (3.29) Tumatakura went up to Hilltop, with Gang Awa in pursuit, the last-named entering the straight slightly in advance of Tumatakura, Enawah, Warplane and Logan’s Pride. There was a solid tussle in the final lane, but Logan’s Pride did best to win by two lengths from Warplane, who beat Enawah by a neck for second place. Tumatakura was fourth and after came Gang Awa, Hostess and the unlucky Royal Silk. Manaia Handicap “Pirst out and first home” described the win of Olive Nelson, favourite for the Manaia Handicap. She was attended early by Speculator and Tamahine, while with a mile gone Bright Light, who broke up at the start, was handy, with Paradigm also going solidly. Olive Nelson was well clear of Tamahine, Speculator, Bright Light ; and Paradigm at the three furlongs post, where Tamahine broke. The favourite went on to win by half a dozen lengths from Paradigm, with old Speculator a similar distance away, third. Tamahine wa3 fourth, followed by Bright Light and Anseline. Normanby Handicap One barrier failing to release caused the start in the Normanby Handicap to be field up and it was further delayed by Sailor Boy’s bridle breaking, the driver, Berkett, receiving a nasty spill. J. Shaw was substituted on Sailor Boy, who went a good race into third place. Item went to the front as pacemaker, followed by Nathaniel, Little Guy. Wild Voyage, Sailor Boy and Ngahuia. There was little change at the half-mile, but Nathaniel displaced Item approaching the straight, where Ngahuia, Little Guy and Sailor Boy were also prominent. Ngahuia came away to win nicely from the favourite. Little Guy, who beat Sailor Boy by a length. Wild Voyage, Trustworthy, High Sea and Cora Tacks were next to finish. President's Handicap Great Author’s Wanganui form proved correct and the West Coaster won the President’s Handicap easily at the finish. Gold Treasure, the favourite, began quickly from 36yds and trailed Bonniewah along the back, ahead of Speed King and Kevinbrae. At the mile post Great Author ran into second place. Gold Treasure and Myrtle Dillon were also close up. Bonniewah held her advantage when the heads were turned for home, but Jarden let Great Author loose and home he came in easy style. Bonniewah hung on to secure second money from Gold Treasure, with Richmond i Lass fourth, followed by Brent Zolock ! (who began badly) and Myrtle Dillon. Eltham Handicap Queen Elizabeth and Rich ore were ! popular fancies for the Eltham Handi- ! cap. but they were beaten into minor places by Ei Direct. Cora Tacks led for a mile from El Derict, Halntore, | Native Hero, Richore and Queen

Elizabeth. Cora Tacks had a slight advantage at the home turn from El Direct, Queen Elizabeth and Richore, but on the final dash El Direct won by a length from Richore, with Queen Elizabeth a head away, third.
