MAORI BOY’S DEFEAT

UNLUCKY IN GOLD CUP INCIDENT AT FEUDING Special to THE SUN FEILDLN'G, Saturday. Although he was beaten into third place, less than two length* from the winner, High Court, the Auckland galloper, Maori Boy, should have won the Manchester Gold Cup, the big race at Feilding today. Cashier was favourite, but Maori Boy carried only £ls less, and High Court was fourth fancy, the lastnamed carrying half a stone overweight to secure T. Green's services. Going out of the straight Maori Boy was handy, being in the middle of the field, and he was four horses out from the rails, and he was still there at the five furlongs. From this point the Auckland horse put in a sharp burst which carried him right up to the leaders, and he actually had his nose in front crossing the top and into the straight, with Pahu on the inside and High Court on the outside, while Llanore, Cashier and Toma were following closely. Maori Boy failed to go on with it, High Court beating Pahu by a neck, with Maori Boy a length and a-half away. Toma, Cashier, Shrewd and Royal Opera finished in a line. Maori Boy appeared to be made too much use of. and ridden with the same judgment as in his recent outings in the North he would have won. Probably Maori Boy will improve on Monday. He did a splendid preliminary today and appeared to be better than ever.
