FEILDING GOLD CUP
KEEN CONTEST WON BY HIGH COURT CONSENT TAKES THE SPRINT Special to THE SL-\ FEILDING, Saturday. A number of well-backed horses were beaten at Feildins: today and bettors generally fared badly. The weather was line and the course fast. Kawa Kawa Hurdles Zippor did not contest the Kawa Kawa Hurdles, and Wlienuaunt took little part in the race through hts rider losing an iron. Whisogne was favourite. Wveford was taken to the front immediately the barrier was released but before the straight \\ as reached Whisogne had assumed charge from Wveford, Rouex, Vivo, Opa and First Ruler. The rider on Whisogne was riding a confident race, but the field was at short intervals along the back, and approaching the turn for home Vivo, Wveford and Ruler was in line attending the leader, with Opa and Rouex within striking distance. At the final fence Opa and Rouex joined in. and the former had too much pace for Whisogne over the final pinch, the aged Hallowmans gelding going on to win by a good two lengths, with Vivo attending Whisogne a further two lengths back. Rouex weakened to take fourth place, with First Ruler next. Opa won very nicely, but opposition was not strong. Ongo Hack Handicap With Piako, Tent Call. Air Laddie and Best Friend absent from the Ongo Hack Handicap, the field was reduced to 11 runners. Equitant (£S3i) dominated the betting market, although Perennis (£5S3> carried solid support, with lesser money for Hunting Bo> and Statuary. Equitant and Ruapatu led to the turn, where Callapat took charge, the favourite dropping back to Hunting Boy. Callapat was still clear at the disance, and although Equitant came with a late effort the filly could not reach Callapat, who prevailed by a short length with Perennis in third place two lengths back. Hunting Boy was fourth, being followed home at close intervals by Leisure and Ruapatu. Perennis was not fortunate in the.running. Hunting Boy did well for the first trip. Manchester Gold Cup - Mountain Heath and Marjoram failed to figure in the Manchester Gold Cup, and Cashier (£775) and Maori Boy (£761) were hacked down to short prices, there being a sharp drop to Pahu (£4S7), with High Court next in demand. Monsogne went out to make the pace from Llanore, Royal Opera and Pahu, with Cashier ahead of Star Area and Maori Boy as they 1 assed through the straight. Monsogne gave way to Llanore going along the back, but approaching the halfmile post. Maori Boy and Paliu moved forward, Royal Opera giving - way. Rounding the top High Court could be observed improving his position, and he turned into the straight in behind Maori Boy and Pahu, with Yoma. attending the winner. Maori Boy weakened inside the distance, High Court and Pahu drawing clear to battle out the finish, the former winning nicely by a neck from the Awappni representative, with a gap of two lengths to Maori Boy. Yoma was fourth, and then in a bunch came Star Area, Royal Opera and Cashier. The time returned —2.5 1-s—was very fast. High Court easily held the others . over the last furlong, being much too good. Pahu should soon win. Yoma failed to run on, and Cashier needed racing to bring him to his best. Maiden Stakes The Maiden Stakes field was weak did the Northerner, Tar Baby, was the solitary defection, which left the big field of IS runners to go to the post. Etehi Rangi (£474) was installed favourite from Pakitere ( £464), with Spearform (£330) next in demand.* When the field had settled down Pakitere "was ‘shelving the way to Moatoa and Etehi Rangi, and they turned for home in that order. Pakitere drew clear crossing the top, Moatoa, Etehi Rangi, Amun Ra, Spearform and Sea Scout being next in order. In the run to the post Pakitere was never seriously challenged, the Arausio filly striding on to win comfortably by two and a-half lengths, with Four Aces in third place a neck behind Spearform. Etehi Rangi was fourth, with Pimple and Bon Eve next to finish*. Etehi Rangi did n'6t get too good a run, but had no chance with the winner. Mongane Handicap Consent won the Mongane Handicap very easily. He carried £912, and wound up a firm favourite from The Raider £734 and Benzora £7OO. Consent jumped out smartly from Gold Dawn and Arikinui, but with a furlong traversed the last-named ran up to Censent, with The Raider, GoldDDarnw r n and Just So next in order. The Raider joined Consent and Arikinui approaching the entrance and the trio turned into the straight on terms, with Just So in behind on the rails. When asked the question Consent drew away to win by a length and a-half from Freehold, who came fast from the back to beat Just So for second money by a neck. Arikinui, Rational 11. and The Raider followed. Freehold is extra well and finished fast. Arikinui was a little unlucky and Rational 11. is due soon. Onepui Hack Handicap A field of 16 candidates was presented in the Onepui Hack Handicap, in which Austerity £634 wound up favourite from the bracketed pair. Auctioneer and Limosa £ 533. and Turnbridge - £478, and the judgrtfent proved sound, although it was only in the last stride that Austerity got up to head off Sir Kay and Auctioneer. Sir Kay led Joy Spear, Auctioneer, Austerity, Corwen and Cook through the straight and into the back, where Miss Gossip ran lip into second position ahead of Joy Spear, Cook. Auctioneer and Turnbridge. The positions again underwent changes crossing the top, Llyn Du, Tunbridge and Austeritv improving their positions. Sir Kay was first to straighten out from Cook and Llyn Du, but at the distance Auctioneer came through on the rails, while Austerity joined issue on the outside. An exciting finish saw Austerity get up to beat Sir Kay by a head, with Auctioneer another head back. The trio were clear of Jov Spear, with Remora, Limosa and Cook next to finish. Sir Kay should have won. Halcombe Handicap Ruanui was a hot favourite who went under in the Halcombe Handicap. Tenacre led all the way and entering the straight he was followed by Broad Acre, Second Thoughts and Ruanui. The last-named could not reach him in the run home, Tenacre winning by one and a-half lengths !* om *“ anui - ' vho beat Second Tnoughts by a length, while Manly and Melissa followed.
