ACCIDENT FUND PROPOSED From Our Oxen Correspondent WAIHI, Saturday. Renewal of the offer of the Wailii Gold Mining Company, made some years ago, to subsidise to the extent of £ for £ a sickness and accident fund for the workers has been sought by a deputation which waited on Mr O. Rhodes, New Zealand director of the company, and other officials. When the offer was first made by the company, it was proposed that the men should each contribute Is a week to the fund, the employers to find a like amount, with a maximum annual liability of £1,500. Although a ballot showed that the majority of the men were in favour of the scheme. Mr. Rhodes decided that the verdict was not sufficiently unanimous to warrant its introduction, but at Waikino, where the ore is crushed, the workers were so enthusiastic that they adopted the proposal, which has since proved of much benefit to them. Mr. Rhodes has given the Wailii men a sympathetic hearing, and has suggested that steps be taken to convene a meeting of the whole of the workers, with a view to placing the original proposal before them and again taking a ballot.
