THE SINGAPORE BASE

NEED FOR CAREFUL REVIEW MR. ALEXANDER’S STAND British Official Wireless RUGBY, Thursday. In the House of Commons today Commander J. M. Kenworthy, Labour member for Kingston-upon-Hull, inquired in view of the three Powers treaty whether the Government proposed to proceed with the Singapore naval base, especially as to the provision of facilities for docking battleships. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. A. V. Alexander, said the matter would need to be carefully reviewed in the light of the treaty without delay in full consultation with the Dominions. Commander Kenworthy: Has not the position been altered by the announcement that the Government looks for the eventual disappearance of battleships? What is • the use of proceeding with battleship docks? Mr. Alexander: No useful purpose can be served at present by discussing that. Commander Kenworthy: Can we be assured that useless expenditure will be averted under the Labour Government’s policy ? Mr. Winston Churchill: Do we understand there will be no alteration in policy until after the Imperial Conference? Mr. Alexander: I did not say that, but as soon as the Conference is over we will consider the matter in full consultation with the Dominions.
