PYJAMA PARADE

WELCOME TO VISITING VARSITY ATHLETES BOXING TOURNEY TONIGHT Var cries and cheers for the four rival University colleges rang through the Auckland railway station yesterday morning when 150 delegates, who are to take part in the inter-University tournament here during Easter, were welcomed vociferously by their Auckland hosts. Hakas and a pyjama parade staged by between 30 and 40 “maidens” of the Auckland college, added an air of freedom and gaiety of the true University spirit. The concrete kiwi, Auckland’s indestructible mascot, was well in evidence, but the emblems of the Southern teams were kept in the background awaiting a mcment when they could be produced without danger. The visitors arrived in two main bodies, those from Canterbury and Victoria Colleges shortly before S a.m., and the Otago University team about 11.30 a.m. They were obviously tired after nearly 4S hours’ travelling. A few stragglers reached here by the daylight Limited late last night and one, who left the South with the other delegates, has as yet failed to put in an appearance. The visitors were welcomed officially yesterday afternoon in the College Hall by Professor W. P. Worley, chairman of the professorial board of the college. Mr. A. K. Turner, chairman of the Auckland Tournament Committee, and Mr. J. Nigel Wilson, president of the Students’ Association, also spoke. Mr. P. S. de Q. Cabot, of the University of Otago, replied on behalf of the visitors. Today the preliminaries of the tennis tournament are being played at the Stanley Street courts. They will be concluded on Tuesday. The first rounds of the boxing tournament were decided this morning and tonight the finals will be staged in the Town Hall. All grades are well matched and willing contests should be the order of the day. This University series can always be relied on for an exhibition of scientific boxing and should prove well up to standard this year. An eight-oar rowing event will be decided this afternoon on the harbour. A motor drive and tea at the University, followed by church service at St. Matthew’s, has been arranged for tomorrow.
