THE ACCEPTANCES

Vali Preferred in St. Leger FIELD IS GOOD TODAY’S FORM AS GUIDE One of the most interesting contests to be staged at Ellerslie on Monday, the second day of the Auckland autumn meeting, is the G.N. St. Leger, which this year has drawn a good field. At present Vali is the horse that is generally anticipated to hold the best winning chance. In the decision of the N.Z. St. Leger at Trentham last month Vali beat Waterline very narrowly, and there were critics who disputed Vali’s claim to be regarded as the best in the field that day. The pace was not on and Vali, getting the last run, pulled it off at the expense of the favourite. That is what is contended by supporters of Waterline. It is regrettable that Waterline is not engaged in Monday’s classic, so that the question of three-year-old staying supremacy, which is what the St. Legers represent, can be definitely settled. There is no reason to anticipate any result other than that seen at Trentham last month, for Vali is perhaps better now than at any stage of his career. That view is based upon his impressive sprint victory at Te Rapa a week ago. Count Palatine finished second to Honour in the New Zealand Derby, but since then he has on one occasion only given a glimpse of his true form. Don Quixote appears to be a fair sort of stayer, and as he must be improving all the time he should be able to make a race of it. Gemlight sticks on, and so do Pedestal, Motere, Duellona and My Own. The contest is going to be an interesting one, but support should be sufficient to make this pair strongly fancied: VALI COUNT PALATINE The following is the field engaged in the classic event, the G.N. ST. LEGER Count Palatine Don Quixote H. Gray Flying Prince .. .. A. Tinker Gemlight R. McTavish Imperial Prince Motere .. .. A. McCormac Pedestal T. Webster Vali R. S. Bagby Duellona Eaglet My Own J. Barry All the above three year-olds claim engagements at Ellerslie today, so with that form to go upon there may be a last-minute alteration necessary. But in all probability Vali and Count Palatine will continue to gain in favour with the public.
