A CITY OF “JOINERS"
VIENNA HAS 20,000 CLUBS TO CHOOSE FROM Vienna is a city of "joiners.” Clubs' and societies to the number of 20.000 are registered with the police authorities. They range from clubs with less than. 100 members to societies with more than 10,000. Altogether there are 1,800,000 members listed in these clubs and societies, so that every man, woman, and child of the city could be included but for the fact that many people are members of several organisations. The objects of the clubs are exti emely varied —from pure amusement to such serious matters as protection of trade interests, from lovers of peasoup with pig’s ears who meet weekly at a certain restaurant to vegetarian societies, from savings clubs to holiday associations, from teetotallers to drinkers, from bachelors to spinsters and many others. It does not need much initiative to form a club in Vienna. One or two chance meetings between persons of similar interests nearly always lead to an organisation of some sort
