AIR MAIL ROBBERY
PILOT HELD UP IN CHICAGO PORTLAND BANK ROBBED Reed. Noon. NEW YORK, Friday. A Chicago message states that the first air mail robbery occurred when a plane alighted at a landing ground almost in the heart of the city. The pilot stepped out to lift five bags of registered mail out and found himself staring into guns held by two robbers, who relieved him of his entire load, worth about £IO,OOO. They escaped in a motor-car. Another bold robbery occurred in Portland, where two bandits entered a bank, carrying a lunch box which contained ropes. They trussed-up the employees and secured £2,000 in bank notes, but overlooked £4,000 in gold coin.
