NEW POST OFFICE
NEARING COMPLETION IN AUCKLAND WEST OPENING ON TUESDAY A week ago two empty and adjacent shop premises were to be seen in the Manchester Unity building at the intersection of Hobson and Victoria Streets. On Tuesday they will be replaced by a model post office, open and ready for business. Already the new Auckland West post office is approaching completion. When a Sun man called this morning, painters, stainers, carpenters, plasterers, an electrician, a Public Works foreman, and a supply of brand-new furniture occupied the major portion of the 80 square yards which comprise the interior. The work was proceeding at top speed, for an order had gone forth that the post office must be ready for opening on . Tuesday. One of the original shop premises constitutes the public area of the new post office; the other will hold such “back-stage” mysteries as telegraphic instruments, letter racks, filing systems, and the dozen and one features which contribute to the proper handling of his Majesty’s mails. A space has been knocked out of the partition and in this the counter has been set. In the public division are eight writing cubicles and a telephone booth. This portion of the new office is complete save for the minor attentions of a stainer. The Auckland West post office, as it will be known in future, is placed in the heart of a busy and growing area. Its outward appearance is enhanced greatly by the grey facings of New Zealand marble which are a feature of the Manchester Unity building. It is announced that Mr. G. F Church, of the Auckland telegraph office, has been appointed postmaster.
