STRIFE IN SAMOA
SUBVERSIVE INTERESTS IN DOMINION MR. VEITCH SPEAKS OUT • Samoa is peaceful now, and I hope the people of New Zealand will do nothing to lead the minds of the Samoans in the wrong direction,” said the Hon. W. A. Veitch, speaking a. a meeting last evening in Newmarket. Air. Veitch was supporting Air. Alan Donald, United candidate for Parnell. Air. Veitch held that the Samoan disorder had been kept alive by subversive interests in New Zealand. A Voice: Harry l*dlano2 Air. Veitch: I shall mention no names from this platform and certainly not that of a brother member of Parliament. The speaker reminded his audience that the first, life lost was that of a police constable who had been merely doing his duty. In the interests of that law and order so prized within tho British Empire, it had been necessary for the Government to take firm control. It was most regrettable that the trouble had arisen and that lives had been lost, but the Government had been faced with an unpleasant duty which was now completed. UNEMPLOYMENT CURES Tho Alinister dealt with the work of the United Party, particularly in regard to finance. He also referred at length to the unemployment question, remarking that there were necessary an immediate palliative and a means of ultimate elimination. It was hoped to do much toward that next session when land settlement and the development of certain industries would be considered. One of the greatest difficulties was the attraction of New Zealand loan moneys to Australia, where losses, largely due to industrial strife, had resulted in the offering of better rates for capital. “AVith Mr. Donald, I recognise that it is not possible by a move of the hand, or the passing of a law, to cure the economic disease of unemployment, but. with co-operation and the abandoning of party strife, we should solve the difficulty finally within a year or two,” Mr. Veitch concluded.
