THE CASH RIDERS

Saturday week will see the roads on the Mangere circuit once more alive with the cyclists of the Auckland Club, when this body commences the new season. An increase in membership lias been recorded, no fewer than 36 entries having been received for the initial outing. Many of these are new riders and the task of Mr. George Knight will not be an envious one. * * *

The following is the programme drawn up by the special committee of the club:—April 2G, three laps; May 3, four laps; May 10, two laps; May 17, stadium to Henderson and back (25 miles); May 24, three laps; May 31, two laps: June 7, Papakura and back (32 miles); June 14, time trial and sealed handicap; June 21, four laps; June 28, Ellerslie and back (app. 22 miles): July 5, championship A and B grades; July 12, two laps; July- 19. three laps; July 26, Epsom to Drury and back; August 2, three laps; August 9, four laps; August 16, two laps: August 23, stadium to Henderson and back; August 30, three laps; September 6, four laps; September 13, Clevedon and back (45 miles); September 20, two laps; September 27, Hamilton to Auckland (85 miles); October 4. three laps; October 11, Papakura and back; October 18, three laps. In conjunction with the above programme a cup is donated for the rider securing the most points during the season. The runner-up will be the recipient of the Party Shield, while fastest time honours will count for the cup donated by the club. Last season these trophies were won by Tim Lowrdes. with K. Mathieson, S. Hayes and W. Archer, dead-heating for second, while S. Hayes easily accounted for fastest time.

The most-talked-of feature in the cycling ranks at present is the performance of H. Opperraan in lowering the world's 100-mile record. It was rather a pity that more people did not see this wonder in action when lie appeared here. When it is remembered that J. Harcourt worn the Hamilton - Auckland race, a distance of 85 miles, in 2 hours 45 minutes, it will be readily seen that Opperman is a cyclist out of the ordinary. His time, 3hr 39min 38sec, lowers the previous record bv 46min 30.seIt will be indeed r, freak that would lower the r.ow time. In tioned that Opperman's time was rnad { motor-paced, on a track that i could not be classed with the course of j the local classic.
