In the Market Place
POULTRY PLENTIFUL FRUIT PRICES UNCHANGED Very heavy supplies of poultry have been offered during the past week at the city markets, and a keen demand has existed for all good killabie lines. Poultryfarmers are now quitting their culls, and there is a tendency for the supply to exceed the demand. The market is very similar to that of last Christmas. Cockerels were the medium of brisk competition, and high values -were returned for choice quality birds. Heavy hens maintained their values well, selling strongly throughout. Light hens and ducks remain unchanged. A good supply of turkeys was offered, only well finished birds- realising good values. There is little alteration in the prices lor fruits. There is a fair demand for good dessert pears, but apples are still dull of sale, and rejects and windfalls are not wanted. Passions are selling at last week’s rates. Tomatoes are in good demand, and there are a fair number of inquiries for hothouse and outdoor grapes. The market is over-supplied with cabbages, pumpkins, beans, and kumeras. The demand is fair for all lines of vegetables, and heavy supplies are coming forward. Supplies of farmers’ butter are getting slightly short as the season draws to an end. There is a good demand for eggs, which are selling at Tuesday’s rates, supplies remaining moderate.
