EASTER TOURNAMENT BEGINS FRIDAY INFLUX FROM SOUTH The varsity spirit will take Auckland by storm tomorrow morning, with the arrival of 150 southern students for the twentysixth New Zealand I nter- U niverstty Tournament, which is to be Held in Auckland over the Easter holidays. This is the big event of the university student year in New Zealand, and only once in four years is held in Auckland. The southern students from Otago University, Canterbury College and Victoria University College (Wellinston) are due by the 7.54 a.m. express tomorrow, and can expect a traditional varsity welcome at the Auckland station. Alost of the visitors will be billeted privately, there having been a first-class response on the part of the Auckland students to the delegates’ plea for billots. During the progress of the tournament the student block, the college hail and the cafeteria will be open as a club and rendezvous for the visitors and their Auckland hosts. A lounge lias been prepared as a common meeting place for men and women students, and as the official programme adds, such a place needs no recommendation. The college hall will be open for dancing on Saturday evening, and on Monday evening till 1 a.m. on Tuesday. In the cafeteria supper will be served free to students. An information bureau will be run for the convenience of the visitors, and telephones and other services will be placed at their disposal. The programme of events for the tournament is as follows: FRIDAY 10 a.m.—Weigliing-in of boxers. 2.30 p.m.—Official welcome fo visitors at college hall: afternoon tea. 7 p.m.—Delegates’ meeting. SATURDAY 9.30 a.m.—Tennis preliminaries—Stanley Street courts (all day). 10 a.m.—Boxing preliminaries—Town Hall. 8 p.m.—Boxing finals—Town Hall. SUNDAY 2.0 p.m.—Alotor drive—leaving University. 2.30 p.m.—Afternoon tea at Ellerslie Racecourse. 5.30 p.m.—Tea at University for those attending church service. 7 p.m.—Church service at St. Matthew’s. MONDAY 9 a.m.—Basketball preliminaries on College court. 11 a.m.—Athletic championships at the Domain Cricket Ground. 1 p.m.—Basketball finals on College court. 2 p.m.—Athletic championships at Domain Cricket Ground. 8 p.m.—Swimming championships at the Tepid Baths. TUESDAY 9.30 a.m.—Tennis finals —Stanley Street courts (all day). 7.45 p.m.—Tournament ball—Scot’s Hall. During the progress of the tournament the meeting of the delegates to the recently formed National Union of Students will be held. The New Zealand branch was formed at Christchurch at Easter last year. The following are the delegates from the four colleges:— Victoria.—Miss L. Mitchell, Messrs W. J. Mount joy, G. B. Richardson. Otago.—Miss A. Platts-Mills (vice-pre-sident), Messrs. P. S. DeQ. Cabot (president), .T. A. Stallworthy, X. S. Woods and J. C. Dakin. Canterbury.—Miss E. A. Jones, Messrs. D. W. Bain (vice-president) and E. B. E. Taylor Chon, secretary). Auckland.—Miss Z. O. Lloyd, Messrs. R. B. Hardy and J. X. Wilson. Several of the finest athletes in New Zealand will be seen in action on the Domain on Easter Monday. Jenkins, the New Zealand 220j r ds champion: Ramson, the New Zealand hurdles champion: and Cabot, Dominion champion walker, will be competing. The swimming carnival will be the first held for the shield presented last year for inter-varsity competition by the staff of the Auckland University College, and in addition there will be several other events. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, has presented a medal to be awarded to the competitor giving the most scientific display of boxing at the tournament. The fight for tennis supremacy is expected to be keen, with Alan Stedman, the brilliant Aucklander, favoured as the likely winner of the men’s singles.
