AUSTRALIA OFFERS TWO NEW SUBMARINES OVERTURE TO ADMIRALTY United I*.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 9 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. It is understood the Commonwealth Government is trying to sell to the British Admiralty her two latest submarines the Otway and the Oxley. The submarines Oxley and Otway, which are sister-ships of the Oberon, Britain’s most up-to-date under-water craft, have been classed by experts as the best all-round type of submarine yet built. Australia’s first two submarines were built just before the war. One of them was lost with all hands at New Guinea in 1914, and the other \Vas the first British submarine to enter the Dardanelles, which it did on the first Anzac Day, April 23, 1915. This vessel was later lost in the Sea of Marmora. After the war the British Admiralty presented Australia with six J class submarines, which were later scrapped.
