LEGAL CONFERENCE

IMPORTANT SESSIONS IN AUCKLAND NOTABLE SPEAKERS More than 150 lawyers are expected to visit Auckland for the three days of the third annual conference of tli€j New Zealand Law Society, beginning next Tuesday. Questions of legal and public importance will be discussed, and the Attorney-General, Sir Thomas Sidey, is expected to give an address. The Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, will give the inaugural address. The Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, will welcome the visitors on Tuesday morning, and the sessions, which are; to bq held in the University College Hall, will begin. Mr. R. P. Towle, president of the Auckland District Law Society, will open, the conference officially, and will then vacate the chair for Mr. A. Gray, I£.C., of Wellington, who will preside. Several papers will be read. Mr. H. F. Johnston, K.C., of Wellington, will give an address on circumstantial evidence; a paper by Mr. J. B. Callan, of Dunedin, will be on “Appeal to the Privy Council”; Mr. C. H. Weston, of New Plymouth, will have “Nisi Prius” as a subject; and Professor R. M. Algi.e, of Auckland, will give an address on the position of mortgages in respect to fire insurance. While most of the remits are technical in nature, there are several of general importance. One suggests legislation to make the law concerning collisions on land similar to that for collisions at sea, so, when both parties are negligent, damages may be apportioned; and another remit recommends the making available to counsel or the parties concerned of statements of Witnesses taken by the police in investigating “running down” and accident cases. A social committee has beeen formed, and Mrs. Towle Is at the head of a women’s committeee which will entertain the visitors’ wives. A reception, a harbour excursion, a bridge evening, golf at Titirangi, a theatre part\-, and a dance are among the arrangements.
