BIRKENHEAD WOMEN’S WELFARE ASSOCIATION NEW BRANCH FORMED A branch of the Women's Welfare Association was formed at Birkenhead at a meeting of women, held in the Council Chambers, Birkenhead, last evening, at which the Mayoress, Mrs. J. P. McPhail, presided. The committee comprised:—Mrs. J. P. McPhail, president; Mrs. Gilfillan, vice-president; Mrs. A. E. Woods, secretary and treasurer; Mesdames Mills, Hewson, Jasper, Kemp, McKinstrey and Darlow, committee. Others present who joined the association were Mesdames Pike, Osborne, Morris, Wright, Hayman, Gracie, Patten, Campbell and Miss Mills. The association is open to all women of the borough to join, the subscription being 2s 6d. The first committee meeting is being held on May 7, when arrangements will be made for the lirst social evening.

BRIDGE AND TEA MISS EVELYN FORD ENTERTAINS A FEW FRIENDS # Miss Evelyn Ford entertained a few friends at bridge yesterday afternoon at her home in Remuera Road. Bright autumn flowers were attractively arranged in the rooms, and the young hostess received her guests wearing a pretty flowered chiffon frock. Those present were: Mrs. S. C. BRING AND BUY SOCIAL EVENING; NATIONAL COUNCIL ORGANISES j HAPPY FUNCTION The Auckland branch of the National Council of Women held a social evening and a “bring and buy” sale in the Y.W.C.A. rooms last evening, in order to raise the quota promised by the council toward the Dominion Council's fund to provide an obstetrical scholarship. Well-stocked tables of fruit, produce and fancy work were well patronised and a substantial sum was realised. Miss B. Carnaclian, president of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women, welcomed the members and 'their friends. An interesting- competition was held in which all present were introduced to each other. A short programme was also arranged, items being given by Miss Johnstone, songs and a recitation; Mrs. Armstrong, violin solos; Mrs. Dreaver, musical monologue; Mr. Wright, songs. Supper was served later and brought to a close a very enjoyable evening. MORNING TLA AT LYCEUM CLUB MRS. COOKE ENTERTAINS HER COMMITTEE Mrs. W. A. Cooke, convener and honorary treasurer of the Auckland West branch of the obstetrical appeal, was hostess at a delightful morning tea party in the Lyceum Club lounge yesterday, given for the members of the committee set up to canvass the Herne Bay, Ponsonby, Richmond, West End, Westmere districts. A lovely bouquet of autumn-coloured flowers was presented by Mrs. Flynn to Mrs. Cooke as an appreciation of the splendid work she had done in connection with the raising of the quota for the area. The Mayoress, Mrs. A. D. Campbell, on behalf of the executive committee, also thanked Mrs. Cooke, congratulating her on having collected £330 when the quota for the district had been £250. Speaking for the committee which had worked with Mrs. Cooke, Mrs. G. S. Cammel paid tribute to Mrs. Cooke’s leadership. Bell, of Avondale, was married to Gordon Arthur, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Hollier, of Avondale. The R<*v. Father Colgan performed the ceremony. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a frock of ivory satin beaute and embroidered net, relieved with pearls and brilliants. Her bouquet was of white flowers. The bridesmaid, Miss Rita Bell, a sister of the bride, was frocked m powder blue crepe d© chine, with a tulle hat and bouquet to tone. Mr. P. Quirke acted as best man. Later a reception was held in St. Mary’s Hall, where the bride’s mother received her guests in a frock of pencil blue crepe de chine relieved with coffee lace and a cream felt hat. Her bouquet was of autumn tints. Mrs. Hollier chose a gown of navy blue crepe de chine, with a hat to tone. GOWN OF IVORY SATIN PANELLED WITH SILVER LACE FISH—THOM At the Pitt Street Methodist Church last evening the marriage was celebrated of Vera, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. TV. Thom, of Mount Albert, to George, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Fish, of Glen Eden. The Rev. TV. Walker performed the ceremony. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a frock of ivory satin with a slightly uneven hem and a wide panel of silver lace from the neck to the waistline. She wore an embroidered tulle Veil held in place with a coronet of orange blossom, and carried a shower bouquet of white flowers. Two bridesmaids attended the bride, Miss Eileen Thom, who wore mauve crepe de chine, and Miss Eileen Elliott, in peach crepe de chine. The frocks were made with tiered skirts and wide cape collars, while their headdresses were of tulle. They carried bouquets to tone with their frocks. Little Marie Fish, as flower girl, wore a frock of powder blue crepe de chine with frilled skirt, and a bandeau of blue tulle round the head. She carried a Victoria posy of pink flowers. The bridegroom was attended by Mr. T. Fish as best man and Mr. Alan Thom was groomsman. PROGRESSIVE CROQUET ENJOYABLE TOURNAMENT AT PONSONBY An enjoyable progressive croquet afternoon was held on the Ponsonby Croquet Club’s lawns on Saturday afternoon. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Chapman, Greenslade and Lyon, who provided a dainty afternoon tea and also the prizes for the competition, which were won by Mesdames Oswald, Hilton. Black, Leonard and TVarnock. Mrs. Gallaher, president. on behalf of the members, proposed a vote of thanks to the hostesses for their hospitality.
