UNPOPULAR DECISION
HANCOCK GETS VERDICT OVER TROWERN BOXING AT DUNEDIN Special to THE SUN DUNEDIN, Tuesday. Hooting, long and loud, greeted th«decision in favour of Wally Hancfek, of Australia, against Reg Trowern, of Auckland, after 15 rounds of solid fighting at Dunedin tonight. The referee’s raising Hancock's hand as a victor on points was the signal for a storm of protest from the 2,000 spectators. Indeed it was extremely difficult to make Hancock a winner and the referee appeared to be practically the only one who did so. But it was his opinion that counted. From the first round Trowern, who weighed in at lOst 141 b, with Hancock two pounds heavier, forced the fight and he kept up these tactics during practically the whole of the contest. He missed sometimes, but Hancock missed more. For seven rounds the Aucklander was a winner all the way and it did not appear that the bout would go the distance. Hancock, however, came to life and improved as the bout progressed. The ninth was liis best round, Trowern collecting the points in the next three rounds. Hancock took the 13th, in which he let loose a two-handed attack, culminating in two lefts, sending Trowern through the ropes. Trowern again forced the fight in the final round and won the round. A conservative estimate gave Trowern 11 rounds and Hancock only four, so the referee’s decision came as a surprise.
