HON. H. ATMORE HONOURED TOUR OF KING COUNTRY From Our Own Correspondent TAUHARUNUI, Tuesday. The Minister of Education, the Hon. LI. Atmore, has been making a tour of the King Country, investigating questions in connection with the various schools, and meeting deputations having urgent matters to bring before the department. In all cases Mr. Atmore has given the representations a sympathetic hearing, but has stressed the point that while the department would like to do a great deal more it is bound by the financial limits imposed upon it by Parliament. A great deal more money could be spent, were it available, and spent judiciously in the interests of education. This applied to the whole Dominion. While at the Okahukura school, near Taumarunui, the Minister took part in a very interesting ceremony, and one reminiscent of the King Country. The Ministerial party included Mr. F. Langstone, M.P. for Waimarino, and Mr. W. Broadfoot, M.P. for Waitomo. Referring to the Okahukura school, Mr. Broadfoot paid a sterling tribute, remarking that nowhere in his electorate did he know of another school that was such a model of beauty and attractiveness.
A special welcome had been prepared for Mr. Atmore by the Maori boys and girls, who appeared in native costume. After a typical native welcome the boys performed a haka, telling the story of how the lovely grounds had been developed from the rough bush, and the girls in a delightful poi depicted how the Ongarue River flowed through the schoolgrounds. Hone Tamati concluded this part of the proceedings with a stirring war-dance, and at its finish advanced to the Minister and presented him with a whakamahara taonga as a fitting tribute to a distinguished guest. In his reply. Mr. Atmore mentioned that of the 1,600 schools he had visited while Minister of Education, the Okahukura School was one of the best. The pupils showed that originality and individuality which was the aim of the present system.
