COMMITTEES’ DELIBERATIONS The Morrinsville Committee expressed a unanimous opinion that the Education Act should be amended to permit Religious instruction under the Nelson system during school hours. A similar motion was passed by the Opotiki Committee. • m » For the first time in years a ballot was necessary for the election of the Thames Committee. The previous members were returned with the addition of Mr. J. TI. Battson. * * • No election was necessary at Te Kuiti. * * * The St. Heliers householders protested against the cost of school textbooks, and their flimsiness. They were also of opinion that all water for school children should be supplied free by the City Council. * * * * There was a small attendance of householders at Tauranga. Mr. B. p. Andrews was elected chairman and Mr R. J. Rendel secretary. JMr. W. M. Wallnutt presided at Waihi. There had been a decrease in the attendance of the primary departments from 687 to 641, although the secondary department had showed an increase of nine over last year’s 140. A reduction in grade of the District High School and the loss of the present headmaster were feared. A separate election is to be held for the Kowhai Junior High School Committee, as it is answerable, not to the annual meeting of householders as is the case with the other committees, but to the Education Board direct. The new committee will be set up in June Mr. R. E. Rudman, the present headmaster, will retire at the end of May after 41 years’ service under the Education Department.
