ELLERSLIE TRIALS
HUNTING DAY PLEASES INTERESTING WORK-OUTS iwo fancied Easter Handicap candidates in Hunting Day and Eager Rose were among those to execute satisfactory gallops at Ellerslie this morning, while of the jumpers a dazzling display by Omeo evoked favourable comment. The gates were thrown open shortly after 6 a.m. and a favourable morning greeted trainers, but a fog enshrouded the course from the half-mile peg, making visibility at the four and three furlong posts difficult. All tracks were in perfect order and conducive to fast times, the majority of trainers prethe course proper (with the flags 45 feet out) to number three grass. Course Proper Gold Money (W. H. Jones) was dispatched over seven furlongs in 1.36 1-5, but at the end of a furlong she was joined by the two-year-old Ruling King, who came home in 1.21 1-5. The youngster always had half a length over Gold Money and wound up with this advantage, although neither was seriously troubled. Tambourine and Neil were paired for once round in 2.18 2-5, the last six furlongs in 1.29 2-5. They were unarms during the contest. Eager Rose, on the outside, beat Kawainga by half a length over five furlongs in 1.5 4-s—fair time. Eager Rose has .suffered no harm from her Waikato effort and is still pleasing her Easter Elandicap admirers. King Emerald covered six furlongs in 1.23 1-5, but did it well within himself. Hannibal proved superior to New Boy at the end of six furlongs in 1.23 3 -o, and over a furlong farther Brampton registered 1.36 3-5, the first halfmile in 53 4-5. Cynthia N. disposed of a mile pleasingly in 1.45 4-5. The imported mare bears a well-trained appearance at present and it is doubtful if she has ever looked better. Not Doing Well , Currajong covered seven furlongs in 1.36 4-5 and was not bustled. He is not doing too well and will probably forego his engagement at Ellerslie on Saturday. The same applies to Salamanda and Freyja. Rawini is another absentee. After going slow in the early part Restaurant and Great Emblem got to the end of five furlongs in 1.8 4-5 Hunting Day (11. Wiggins) Went very smoothly from the five-furlong post Striding over the first furlong in J- 4-. J, two in 24 3-5 and the full journey m a tick over 1.4. He lost no friends and obviously could have done better.
Love Song (on the inside) and Cylinder strode evenly over half a mile in oO 4-5, finishing practically abreast. Cylinder has taken no ill effects his recent racing and Love Song shapes nicely for a novice. Star Stranger (H. Gray), Don 'P™, 1 * 0 . 1 . 6 i H ’ Wi gg‘ns> and Operatic (W. H. Jones) were associated in a spin over six furlongs. The first pair drew out at the end and were doing it particularly well to record 1.19 3-5. Tho first furlong took 14, two in 27 2-5 and three in 39 3-5. Quincoma showed too much pace for Dark Prince when they completed a circuit in 2.15 1-5. The former is still light in condition, but is much In'ighter. Mon Star defeated Manawhenua over six furlongs in 3.22. Corinax was restricted to an easy round on No. 3 grass, taking 2.10 3-5. ' At the Barrier The mile barrier was put into use for schooling purposes, W. Ryan officiating at the lever. A number were lined up, including Green Timber, Grand Spirit, Good Idea, Glittering Gold, Manawhenua, Twinkler, jaeldy Karo, St. A mans gelding and R. E. Brown’s Peach Brandy youngster. Manawhenua was left badly and Jaeldy Karo was also slow. Green Timber and Grand Spirit leading out, but at the end of a furlong the latter was in front and remained there to carve out the four furlongs in 52 4-5, and five in 1.4 2-5. Jaeldy Karo, too, showed a, fine burst of speed and way in the leading division at the end. Over the Obstacles Kauri Park (E. Garrett) and Kamehameha (J. Burgess) negotiated a round (four; of the schooling hurdles without mistake, and following immediately behind was Thursby (R. Olive), but his fencing was erratic. He appeared to be sore. Harbour "View (R. Olive) and Lost Comet (D. Craddock) were paired over two pony hurdles and then two bigger ones, but the latter jumped indifferently. The ’Chasers There were four tt> go over the steeplechase course at 3 0 a.m., viz., Airtight (H. Dulieu), Omeo (L. Jarvis), Marita (J. Burgess) and Odin (E. Stanway). At the stone wall the first, time Marita led Omeo, Airtight and Odin, and at the five furlongs the first three were abreast, Omeo and Airtight leading over the hill from Marita and Odin, the latter pulling out of the bout at the bottom of the hill. Omeo essayed the water-jump at the stands and then completed the last obstacle—the stone wall—with. Airtight. It was a good exhibition of lopping throughout, Omeo pleasing particularly owing to it being his first attempt over Ellerslie country. Master Lu (R. Olive) completed the morning’s work by jumping' the fences on the fiat satisfactorily. Latest Arrivals Arrivals this morning were:—J.
