DISPUTE WITHIN CHURCH
MINISTER TAKES BISHOP TO LITIGATION PREPARED FOR MARTYRDOM XjONDON, Monday. The conflict between Dr. E. W. Barnes, Bishop of Birmingham, and the extremist Anglo-Catholics has reached a crisis owing to the refusal of the bishop to licence the Rev. George Simmonds. Mr. Simmonds was presented by the patrons of the living of St. Aidan’s, Birmingham. They included the Bishop of Truro, Dr. W. H. Frere. Dr. Barnes’s refusal was based on the fact that Mr. Simmonds declined to promise that the reservation of the sacrament, which is contrary to the law of the Church, should cease in St. Aidan’s. Mr. Simmonds took the matter to the Chancery Division, where Mr. Justice Bennett made an order that he should be admitted. The judge commented on the fact that Dr. Barnes had not entered an appearance In the case to defend his action. Dr. Barnes now states that the patrons can go to the Chancery Court. If their appeal causes him to be sent to prison he will no,t complain. He will thus serve reformed religion.
