OLD RUBBISH DUMP SITE Great progress is being made at the I’ew Ford factory at Dagenham, England, The whole of the area on which the works will be built was till recently a garbageidump. This has been careiully levened, the surplus being used for railway embankments. In future the dumping of rubbish will be eliminated, as the Ford Motor Company has started building a garbage destructor, which will convert the garbage to steam for the power-house. This will supply power not only to the plant, but also to the surrounding district, which will he supplied at rates much cheaper than formerly. The buildings for the foundry, manulucturing shops and assembly shop, are of enormous size, and cover an area of a million square feet. The blast furnace will have a capacity of 500 tons of ore a day, and will be the only one in the south of England. The wharf is the longest on the Thames. The whole of the works is supported on piles, which are sunk into the solid river bed, 47ft below the surface. When completed, the capacity of the plant will be 250,000 motor-vehicles per annum, and 15,000 men wit! be employed.
