MONTE CARLO RALLY

! HON. MRS. VICTOR BRUCE WINS ! Quite one of the most popular events i of recent days was the great Inter- | national Motor Rally, which ended at I Monte Carlo recently. The Hon. Mrs. Victor Bruce, the | first woman driver to arrive, received j great ovation, and she fully de- | served it, for it was only her indomitable courage that brought her from Lapland to Monte at such a splendid average speed that she was the firs-t British entrant to reach the j end of the run, in which she covered | over two thousand miles. ! On the way to Sundsvall. from : j which place she sarted, her car, skid- | ding on an icy road, finally crashed j ! over the side in the forest, falling on : the rocks below. Two wheels were broken, the axle-shaft and steering i were bent, the petrol tank, running 1 boards, and wings were also broken, j and the chassis cross-member bent. I After great trouble the car was extricated and towed to the nearest j town, 25 miles away, and repaired just J in time. It is a remarkable tribute j to the fine qualities of the Hillman j Straight Eight that. despite its I crash, it ran faultlessly throughout j the entire run. Among the other British competi- j tors to arrive were Lord de Clifford, Captain J. E. D. Howey, Captain St. I Clair Bolton, and Colonel P. T. Ether- j ton.
