SOCIETY’S MONTHLY MEETING

PROTECTION OF WOMEN The Auckland branch of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children held its monthly meeting In the society’s rooms, Wellesley Street, yesterday afternoon, Mr. A. J. Stratford, president, was in the chair. ‘ After a long discussion on federation with the other centres, it. was decided to draw up a draft of the proposed constitution of the federation and send it to Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin. The branch had written to the Hon. P. A. do la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, asking for an increase to its Government grant. The Minister’s reply stated his inability to increase the grant on account of the present financial position. In reply to a letter asking for free passes for the society’s inspector ancl j collector, the Auckland Transport i Board wrote refusing the request. The resignation of the treasurer, Mr. I Julian Brooks, was received. Mr. Donaldson was appointed to the position. The secretary’s report stated that 52 cases were dealt with from March 10 to April 14, 19 being old cases redealt with. The number of cases sent to solicitors was 15, while the Magistrate’s Court had been attended II times and the Children’s Court five timesIt was decided to hold the society’s annual meeting on April 29.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MEETING OF MATAMATA BRANCH The usual monthly meeting of the Matamata Women’s Institute was held last week, when Mrs. L. Ryan presided over a very good attendance. The delegates to the recent conference gave their reports, and a new member was welcomed. Mrs. Flower gave an interesting demonstration of the making of lamp-shades, giving the material required and the cost. A donation of £2 Is was given to the rest room funds as the result of the sale of cakes, biscuits and recipes brought by the members. Afternoon tezt was served by Mesdames Barkman. Callahan and O’Hara. During the afternoon Miss Sara Stacpole, soprano singer, accompanied by Mrs. John Dunn, violinist, sang several songs, and was enthusiastically applauded. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a successful afternoon.

TAKAPUNA GARDEN PARTY

FUNDS FOR DR. BARNADO’S HOMES A garden party, organised by Mrs. Ellis, of Takapuna, was held on Saturday afternoon at “Taft,” the residence of Mrs. J. PI. Hurne, of St. Leonards Road, Takapuna, in aid of Dr. Barnardo's Homes. Tennis tournaments were held on the lawns and croquet and putting competitions were also played. Afternon tea was served by Mrs. Plume. Mrs. Ellis, Mrs. Symonds and Miss Bell, with helpers.
