Gem light's Good Finish in Te Rapa Handicap
Sprint Won by Lady Quex T'HIIOL GH tlie agency of Corinax, who won the big race at Te Rapa on Saturday, and the successes on the same course yesterday of Gemlight in the principal handicap and of Rafflight in the two-year-old event, Ellersiie trainer ,T. Williamson had a good innings at the Waikato Racing Club's autumn meeting, these three horses capturing £835. The Takanini trainer, J. T. Jamieson, also saddled up three winners at the fixture.
The concluding day’s sport at the Waikato iixture yesterday was thoroughly enjoyed by a large crowd and the weather was fine and the course hard and fast. It was a splendid finishing run from the bottom of the straight that saw Gemlight catch Sir Russell and Prince of Orange about 50 yards from the post, and he won by half a length; he was going away as he passed the judge. There was a thrilling finish in the sprint, Lady Quex narrowly defeating Leitrim and Paganelli. The winner is engaged in next Saturday’s A.R.C. Easter Handicap, for which her weight has now been raised from 7.10 to 8.0. She is a possibility for the big mile. The meeting was conducted in the usual efficient manner associated with racing at Te Rapa, the president, Mr. G. W. Vercoe, and secretary, Mr. E. O’Meara, ably supported by the executive, having thfe gathering perfectly organised. The secretarial duties in the absence of the secretary through illness* were most capably fulfilled by Mr. F. D. McVay. The totalisator handled £25,731. against £20,943 10s for the second day last year, making £50.471 10s for the two days, compared with £58,477 10s, a decrease of £2,000 on the meeting. Ohinewai Maiden Sister White’s placing on the first day ensured good support for her in the Ohinewai Maiden, and she was a solid favourite with £502, but the dividend-payers were Glenison, £166, and Land Measure, £207. Arch Angel and Miss Albyn were slow to move, while Ivingsla nd and Land Measure were momentarily in charge, giving way to Glenison, who ran to the front inside a furlong to pilot Wee Prince, Val Gene, Land Measure, Queenstown, Miss Albyn, Maunga King and Prince Amans. Glenison was well clear passing across the top and she led into the straight with Land Measure, Wee Prince, Val Gene, Queenstown, Sister White, Miss Albyn and Royal Visitor following. Land Measure made a lastminute effort to catch the leader, but just failed to reach Glenison by half a head. Sister White was a moderate third three lengths away and Queenstown and Royal Visitor were right up fourth and fifth respectively, with Val Gene and Waiau Lady next. Ragland Hurdles A bare two-dividend field contested the Raglan Hurdles, most support being forthcoming for Bright Land £72s,
Glena Bay £612 and Grand Arch £472. As on the first day. Temperature made play in the early stages, and passing the stands his attendants wer The Lamb, Grand Arch, Bright Land Mountain Guide and Glena Bay, but going down the back the order underwent a change, Grand Arch attending Temperature, followed by Bright Land. The Lamb. Mountain Guide and Glena Bay, the last moving up sharply crossing the top and being in behind Grand Arch and Temperature as they came into the straight. Glena Bay looked a winner from the last fence and had three lengths over Mountain Guide, who came with a fine run in tire closing stages to cut Grand Arch out by a length. Tlie favourite, Bright Land, was fourth, and The Lamb and Temperature next. Eureka Handicap Backers made no error in the Eureka Handicap, and the favourites, Treme-tus,-Rafflight bracket, £ 611, Karangapai, £486, and Hampton Park, £472, filled the places. Rafflight got the jump out from Tradesman, Karangapai, Tremetus, Laptown, Footrule, Brilliant Lady and Sargon. and at the end of two furlongs Rafflight, Tradesman and ‘ varangapai were nil together, with Brilliant Lady, Footrule, Laptown, Sargon. Tremetus and Hampton Park following, the others being out of it. The leading trio came round the bend in close order, attended by Brilliant Lady Footrule. Sargon and Tremetus. Once under way Rafflight held his own to beat Karangapai by three-quarters ol a length, and a similar distance away was Hampton Park, who unwound a fast run toward the end of the race. Laptown and Tremetus were next, followed. by Holly Holm, Sargon, King March, Tradesman and Abbey Dream. Te Rapa Handicap , With Lady's Boy withdrawn in the Te Rapa Handicap, eight runners were leit to go to the post, and the betting was spirited, Mervette £717 and Prince of Orange £O3B, being prime fancies, but Gemlight £398 and Sir Russell £498, also carried support. Sir Russell was first out from Gemlight and Royal Doulton, and at the six furlong post Sir Russell was clear of Value, Mithra, Prince of Orange, Mervette and Royal Doulton. Reaching the half-mile post Prince Val came through to such effect that he and Prince of Orange were clear of Sir Russell. Value, Royal Doulton, Mervette, Gemlight and Mithra, and with ihe exception of the last-named replacing Value the same order was maintained -into the straight. Gemlight Hashed up from well back, and keeping to his task wore Sir Russell down, ‘*' beat him by half a length with Prince of Orange only a neck away third.. Next to cross tlie line were Royal Doulton, Prince Val. Mervette and Value. Huntly Hack Best backed In the Huntly Hack Handicap were Te Hoia (£750). Chroraadyno (£023), Motere (£518) and Spring Abbey (£422). Chromadyne was first out and led Sweet "Whisper,. I'm Alone, Spring Abbey, Manifest, Te Hoia and Haviland, and with two furlongs passed over, Chromadyne was just ahead of Haviland, Biddy Comet, Manifest, Sweet Whisper, I’m Alone, Te Hoia, Spring Abbey and Motere. Biddy Comet moved into the van crossing the top and led into the
straight from Chromadyne, Spring Abbey, Haviland, Manifest. Motere, I’m Alone and Te Hoia. A good finish resulted, Spring Abbey being in front at the half-distance, but failing to withstand a strong challenge from Motere, he was beaten by a neck. Two and a-half lengths back in third place was Biddy Comet, and then came Manifest, I’m Alone, Gay 'Cockade, Thurnus and Sweet Whisper. Rangiriri High-weight Page Boy £SOB was at a short price for the Rangiriri High-weight, but he went under in a hard-fought finish to the Takanini representative, Be Clioucas, who was second favourite with £543. Prince Lu, Owairaka, Le Clioucas, Macroom. Quinsilia and Wiltshire were first to break an even line, and passing the six furlongs Prince Lu had drawn clear of Owairaka, Le Choucas, Quinsilia, Sir Archie, Page Boy, Macroom and Iving Willonyx. Crossing the top Page Boy ran up to Prince Lu and they turned for home clear of Le Choucas, Sir Archie, Owairaka, Lunette and Macroom. Prince Lu was quickly beaten and then Le Choucas came at Page Boy, the former winning by half a length. Macroom was two lengths away, third, and King Willonyx half a length further back, fourth. Wenday, Lunette and Quinsilia followed. Flying Handicap Paganelli £1,185 was a warm order for the sprint, being at odds on. with Branson £6(56 at the head of the other quotations, Lady Quex £432 and Leitrim £ 438 eventually returning the dividends. Te Atiawa was slow to begin, Awarere, Leitrim, Paganelli. Cady Qyex and Branson being the order out of the tapes. At the end of a furlong Paganelli and Awarere were out clear of Leitrim. Lady Quex. Te Atiawa, Branson and Flying Juliet. Turning for home Awarere and Paganelli were four lengths ahead of Leitrim, Lady Quex, Te Atiawa, Branson and Flying Juliet. Awarere was the first to give way. and Paganelli was challenged at the half distance by Leitrim and Lady Quex. both of whom were in the middle of the track, and in a rattling finish Lady Quex won by a neck from Leitrim and Paganelli was only a head away. Branson was a good fourth, and then came Awarere. Te Atiawa and Flying Juliet. Te Rore Hack A large field of 25 contested the concluding race, the hack sprint. Royal Finance being favourite over Volimond, On Top and Treasury, all four being at fair prices. When they had settled down Treasury was in charge from Awamutu and Valreina. Crossing the top and into the straight Treasury was well clear of Principal. Ruling Chief, Awamutu and Valreina, with On Top,
Volimond and Royal Finance in the middle of the next bunch at the turn, the favourite having lost some ground at the start. Despite hot challenges. Treasury maintained his advantage and went on to win by three lengths from Royal Finance, with Principal a neck away, third. Valreina was fourth, and next to finish were Ruling Chief, who tired in the straight, and Avoncourt. The following are the results: OHINEWAI MAIDEN HANDICAP Of £100; 6 furlongs 5 GLEN ISON (J.
