TRIAL OF SKILL
MR. CHICHESTER’S ENGINE STOPS AIRMAN EVADES TREES Special to THE SUX TE AROHA, Sunday. Owing to unfavourable weather conditions while flying from Auckland to Rotorua, Mr. F. C. Chichester, with Mr. H. B. Maunsell, of Masterton, as passenger, had to land at Te Arolia last evening. In view of approaching darkness, the famous airman decided to land at the Herriesvillo racecourse. Just prior to landing the engine stopped momentarily and the plane began to lose altitude. Finding himself below the level of the belt of trees round the course, Mr. Chichester had to bank his machine to a very acute angle in order to negotiate the only narrow gap in the belt. His manoeuvre was successful and he made a perfect landing. Subsequently th© airman and his passenger were entertained by the Mayor of Te Arolia, Mr. R. Coulter, and Dr. M. H. Dempster, president of th© Te Aroha Aero Club. Th© fliers left To Aroha at 10 a.rn. today for Masterton.
