AT HAWKE'S BAY

GREAT CHARTER’S WIN IN GOLD CUP BOLD front again scores Special to THE SCX HASTINGS, Saturday. There were come surprises at JHas■kiags today, the most notable being the deteat of Toxeuma in the J. D. Ormond Memorial Gold Cup. The course was hard and the day bitterly cold. The totalizator staff harried £15,910, compared with £19.294 on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £28.828. against £32,899 last year, a decrease of £4.071, Kara mu Hurdles Backers thought they could pick the Karamu Hurdles in two. and went heavily for Itouex and Rongo, the iair having tilled the places on the previous day. Ronex went badly, but Bongo might have won had he not struck trouble at the last fence. Zippor led nearly all the way, but Rongo and Wilmoreana were never far behind him. and at the three furlongs they outjumped him and went to the front. Zipper was almost with them at the last hurdle, where Rongo bliAidered badly and dislodged his jockey Zippor had too much speed for Wilmorrann and in the run to the judge beat Idm by two lengths. Rouex was running on at the finish, but was four lengths behind Wilmoreana. Kalajaua completed the course, but was well back. Backers of Zippor got a good price. Pakipakl Handicap Form worked out fairly well in the Pakipaki Handicap, which was for hack sprinters. Bernera was favourite. He got away well, but Lady Lucerne ran past him and led a string out field to the straight. Her nearest attendants were Bernera. Toboggan and Golden Shadow, with Manifesto coming fast on the outside. Toboggan and Bernera fought out the finish. Bernera wining by a neck. Golden Shadow was about two lengths ! away third, and then came Ladv Lu- j •erne. Brown Sugar. Keen and Manifesto. Toboggan will do better soon and so will Manifesto. Juvenile Handicap Henry of Navarre won the Juvenile Handicap in rather attractive style, and shoufd be a fair sort next season. He paid a short price. Ganpat went out fast and led to the straight from Kahikatoa, Henry of Navarre, Fitz Quex and Kapallo. Fitz Quex and Henry of Navarre came away in the straight and Henry of Navarre did best, but he hud only a neck to spare. Rapallo. who was third, was a length and a half away Ganpat was fourth, while Henrv of Navarre should do well later. ‘Fitz Quex is useful and was unlucky today. Ormond Memorial Cup There was a real boil-over in the Or mond Memorial Gold Cup, for which Toxeuma was backed as unbeatable with everything else at a good price Great Charter stumbled slightlv at the : Start, but lost little ground. Admiral j ur ! the running and piloted ! Ihe field to the straight, where Tox- • uma moved up. He soon headed’ Ad- : rmral Drake, but over the last furlong ! l’, re£u Charter came along and beat elm quite comfortably by a length. Mv Own cu 1 : Admiral Drake out of third money, but she was four lengths bemnd the second horse. This race will increase Great Charter in favour fofthe Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton. Burke Memorial Another reverse was suffered bv punters in the Burke Memorial Ilandicap High Court, who was first on I™?* was favourite, but this time ran lust Balloon led the field through S f ,r n ” ‘t. at a leisurely pace. He was followed closely by High Court roi Sel , an,i Bol d Front. There was little change along the back, where jpearmiss and Mountain Heath were ww „?l', nnin . K to ,he straight Balloon was still going easily in front, but soon after turning for home be was in trouble. Bold Front finished very well the outside and under pressure won a neck from Mountain Heath, with hXl a £ ead awar third. Then came uiuoon. bpearmiss and High Court.
