POINT CHEVALIER TRAM
DISPUTE OVER SECTIONS COMPARISON OF FARES Varying lengths of tram and bus sections in the Point Chevalier-Avondale district, and the fares charged are used by the Point Chevalier School Committee in support of its contention that the Transport Board’s proposal to charge 3d from the hall corner to the beach is inequitable. Air. M. P. Hooper, who writes on behalf of the school committee, is dissatisfied with the reasons advanced by the manager to the board, Air. A. j-i. Ford. Air. Hooper says: “In reply to my remarks concerning Point Chevalier transport. Air. Ford said he did not feel prepared to make a lengthy statement, in fact, he felt they should be ignored. We at Point Chevalier are quite used to having requests ignored and all kinds of treatment inflicted upon us. When one sees the clever way he has evaded tho points at issue and the way he has misconstrued my statements, it seems that in this case, at least, brevity was advisable, because the more he says in defence of bis policy, using these tactics, the weaker does his case be-
come. TRAMS CHEAPER ? ‘T did not say the Sunday fare on Ibe trams from the beach to the City was Bd. AVhat I did say was that the Sunday fare on the bus for a long time past has been Sd. Air. Ford cannot deny this. We have always been given to understand that trams were much cheaper to run than buses, this fact being one of the main arguments used by the management and members of the board when advocating the tramway loan. Now. from Point Chevalier hall to the Avondale post office a distance of 112 chains, the board runs a bus and the fare is 2d. From Point Chevalier ball to Point Chevalier beach, a distance of 111 1-5 chains, the board proposes to run the trams at a fare 3d. From Alounr Alber* terminus to Avondale post . Tu-o, a of 136 4-5 chains. I u* 24. “The following are comparav : ve distances and charges:—3.96 miles (31C 4-5 chains), bus 3d—Blockhouse Bar to Alount Albert: 3.26 mile'fe 1260 4-5 chains), bus 3d —via ditto. Manukau Road; .23 miles (18 2-5 chains), bus Id —Hall’s Corn i* and Albert Road; 1.40 miles (112 chains), bus 2d —Point hall to Avondale; 1.71 miles C 136 4-5 chains), 2d—Alount Albert to Avondale; 1.39* miles (111 1-5 chains), tram 3d —Point hall to beach; 73 chains, tram 2d—Walker Road to beach. “Is this consistent with fares charged over other lines” Invited this morning to comment, All*. Ford said the board had decided to review the question of sections and fares after trial of the present arrangements. In the meantime no useful purpose could come out of controversy.
