MANY ELDERLY MEN IN GAOL IMPRISONMENT FOR YEAR The need for establishment of the projected rest home in Auckland was again emphasised by Mr. F. K. Hunt,. S.M., at the Police Court this morning, when he was informed by StaffCaptain Holmes of the Salvation Army, that there are at present 35 elderly vagrants serving terms of imprisonment at the Mount Eden Gaol. James Pollock, a labourer, aged 77, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to a charge of being a rogue and vagabond having insufficient visible means of support and having been previously convicted as an idle and disorderly person. ..According to Detective-Sergeant Kelly, accused had 57 previous convictions. The man had been given every chance, said Captain Holmes. He had been in the Salvation Army home, but would not stay and left after quarrelling- with the cook. ~ He had been -to Rotoroa Island -several times.
