SURPRISE PARTY FOR BRIDE-TO-BE | JOLLY EVENING AT EPSOM A surprise kitchen evening party arranged by Miss Isobel Smalibone visited Miss Thelma Sands at her home in Epsom on Thursday evening in honour of her approaching marriage. Lancing and bridge was enjoyed, also several musical items by the Misses Moore, and a toe dance by Miss Kitty Smalibone. The bride-to-be, Miss Sands, received her guests in pale rose floral taffeta, with georgette and silver trimmings. FOR DEVONPORT OBSTETRICAL APPEAL FUND A bridge afternoon in aid of the Obstetrical Endowment Appeal was held yesterday afternoon in the Devon port Masonic Hall. Scott, president; Mrs. Bennett and Miss Cousins, joint secretaries: Mrs Hough, Mrs. Spence, Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Hislop, Mrs. Rowlands, Mrs. Blomfield and Mrs. T. O. de Clive Lowe, Mrs. Hough and Mrs. Spence were in charge of a stall and Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Rowlands attended to the tea. Among the players were: Mrs. Grib 7 j hen, Mrs. Flemming, Mrs. Bruce Smith, Mrs. .Blackland; Mrs. Goldwater* Mrs. Xaughton, Mrs. Hagen, Mrs. J. Xettleton. Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Bankier, Mrs. Seed, Mrs. Blackburn, Mrs. Newell, Mrs. Weight, Mrs. Crowe, Mrs. Beaumont, Mrs. Fraer, Miss M. Ruder, Miss M. Mason, Miss X. Mason, Miss Hislop and Miss Williams. ENDOWMENT FUND MEETING AT HOWICK A largely-attended meeting was held on Thursday afternoon in the Hawick Pu’ J ■ Hall. District Nurse Jessie T roude presided. An address was given by Mrs. E. C. Maguire, who also conveyed the Queen’s message to the meeting. Another speaker was Mrs. Mulgan. A committee was elected to carry out the preliminary work in raising funds in the district. It was also arranged that a social gatheringshould be held. CROQUET TOURXAMEXT FOR FUNDS The Mount Eden Croquet Club held a. very pleasant progressive croquet afternoon to augment the funds of the obstetrical appeal. Mrs. E. H. Potter, Mayoress of Mount Eden, sp®ke on behalf of the effort. Prizes for croquet, given by Mrs. Rudd and Mrs. Horton, were won by Mrs. Mueller and Mrs. Thomson. Winners of the consolation prizes were Miss Teape and Mrs. Murdoch.

EPSOM BRANCH MEETS The monthly meeting: of the Epsom branch of the League of Mothers was held in the Baptist Church Hall' Inverness Avenue, on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. T. 11. Macky presided. An interesting - address upon modern Palestine was given by the Rev. D. C. Herron, who had attended as a, delegate the Missionary Conference, which was held in Palestine some time ago. Mr. Herron’s impressions and descriptions of his travels were greatly appreciated. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. R. j S. Newcomb and Mrs. H. Thomson.

WEDDING OF THEATRICAL INTEREST CARROLL—STEWART A wedding of interest in theatrical circles was celebrated yesterday afternoon at the Auckland Registry Office, when Miss Catherine Stewart, principal lady of the Freddie Forbes Musical Comedy Company, was married to Mr. Garnet Carroll, manager of the Forbes Company, and acting manager of the St. James Theatre. The bride wore an ensemble of brown panne velvet and beige georgette, with a mink fur coat and beige helmet hat. She carried a bouquet of white flowers. Mrs. F. Forbes accompanied the bride, wearing a grey tailored suit and a close-fitting blue felt hat. She carried a bouquet of white carnations. Miss Margaret Duncan wore a navy blue georgette frock with hat to match, and carried a bouquet of pink flowers. With the bridegroom were Air. Ray Fuller and Mr. R. H. Webber. A small reception was afterward held at the Albert Hotel, the hostess. Airs. Webber, wearing a navy blue floral satin frock with a coat and hat to tone.
