High Court Wins Cup at Hawke s Bay Races

FIRST DAY OF MEETING toxeuma beats cylinder Special to THE SUN HASTINGS, Today. perfect weather favoured the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club for its autumn meeting. The attendance was fair and the totalisator put through £12,918. an increase of £ 8 on last year’s turnover. The course was hard, ih® little rain that licid fall< n having: had small effect. The Cup, an old-time handicap of considerable note, drew a poor field, but the Stakes and other events were interesting and on the whole the programme was fair. Mangatarata Hurdles Kauk iuponga would have been favourite for tho Mangatarata Hurdles, but went wrong and was withdrawn. Respite a big boom in favour of the Gisborne-owned Kongo old Kouex went out favourite and won. It was a slow run race, in tho early part Kongo and 2ippor led. Passing through the straight Master Arch and Wilmoreana •were nearest the leaders and turning into the back stretch with six furlongs to go Wflmoreana cracked on the pace ami dashed to the front. Zippor attempted to go with him and lost ground at tho next obstacle. Kouex made a fast move forward half a mile from home, but Kongo outjumped him at tho hurdle near the three furlongs from home. Kouex, however, came again and finishing too solidly for Kongo, was the first over the last and won by two lengths. Ponjola, who was third, was fivelengths behind Kongo and just ahead pf Wilmoreana. Zippor and Master Arch were next. Master Arch looked well and might be an early winner in the hunters’ class. Poukawa Handicap Thirteen contested the Poukawa Handicap, with Lady Lucerne a strong favourite. Tho favourite had every chance and failed, but it is likely the race will improve her. The start was a good one. Lady Lucerne went into the lead immediately and led along the back from Keen, Werata, King Mau, Bernera and Golden Shadow. Golden Shadow moved up very smartly half a mile from home and crossing the top was lying second to Lady Lucerne. These two led Werata to the straight and in the run home Werata went to the front without much difficulty and won by a length Irorti Bernera. with King Manu a neck away third. Golden Shadow and Lady Lucerne who were next were close up. Werata was never troubled and won with something in reserve. Bernera looked big and should do better a little ; later. Nursery Handicap The Nursery Handicap brought out a number of interesting juveniles. Good backing came for Pakitere, Courtesy and Fitz Quex. War Worn moved out of the barrier more smartly than the others. Courtesy was close behind him in the early stages of the race and Ruby Step was next. Courtesy was going so well at this stage that her prospects looked particularly rosy, but

Fitz Quex moved up fast at the threefurlong post. Courtesy finished much better than Fitz Quex and won by two lengths. Pakitere, who headed the others, was a length further back, and the next were War Worn, Gasconade. Acmil and Futurist. Courtesy lived up to her breeding. She is by Lernond from Homage, and outclassed the field. Fitz Quex should pick up a stake at Faster. Pakitere needed the race. Hawke’s Bay Stakes The Hawke’s Bay Stakes was a good thing for Toxeuma, who, though favreturned his backers a good dividend. Toxeuma began better than was generally expected and was never far from the front. For three furlongs Toxeuma, Cylinder and Chrysology ran in line. Chrysology then went to the front and with half the journey covered was leading. Chrysology and Cylinder were together in front of Toxeuma as tho field turned for home. Toxeuma came out wide entering the straight, but he soon collared the leaders and had the race won at the distance. He won by half a length, but the margin could have been greater, as he scored very easily. Chrysology faded in the run homo and Jenny Diver finished third, four lengths behind Chrysology was lourth and Te Awlia last. Toxeuma was so distinctly superior that the youngor horses can hardly be reckoned a good lot. Cylinder was a big disappointment and he will now go out of favour for the remainder of his autumn engagements. He will need to improve vastly to win at Auckland. Chrysology was another disappointment. He totally failed to stay. Hawke’s Bay Cup A poor lot contested the Hawke’s Bay Cup, which was a poor race. High Court lost six to eight i" -r*';s at the rise of the starting barrier, but as the pace was slow he was up with tho tail of the bunch as the field turned out of the straight. Mountain Heath made the early running ahead of Mothplane nnd Don Quixote, with The Hawk next. Five furlongs from home Mountain Heath and Moth plane were in charge from Don Quixote and The Hawk.

There was a closing ,up of the field as the home corner was rounded, and the leadexs soon compounded, and Tho Hawk looked a possibility, but High Court swept up from the rear and settled the others in decisive fashion, winning by two lengths from Tho Hawk, whose nearest attendant was Spearmiss, a length away. Balloon, Mountain Heath, Don Quixote and Mothplane was the order in which the others finished. Spearmiss could not get a run in the straight, but would have been nearer than third with a clear passage. Mountain Heath found tho journey too long, and Balloon was cut about in the running. High-Weight Handicap Tho field for the High-Weight Handicap had not gone far before it was strung out with the favourite, Auctioneer, at the tail. Cook, Whakaari, Rich Harvest and Kimbo and Tourist were early leaders, with Grattus moving up in the later stages. Tourist did the best in the final run, and won by a length from Whakaari, who beat Grattus by a neck for second place. Rich Harvest was a close fourth, and Cook and Auctioneer, who were next, were a long way back. Auctioneer is no champion, but yesterday he did not show his form and never looked like winning. A great dividend would have been hoisted bod Whakaari won. The Gisborne representative is not a bad sort. Autumn Handicap Admiral Drake finished up favourite for the Autumn Handicap. With luck he might have won. Rory Mor and Ivinsel were the leaders most of the way, with Queen’s Choice prominent. but outside the other two. Bold Front and Admiral Drake came away from the others in the final furlong, and Bold Front finished best to win by half a neck. Kinsel was a fair third, Queen’s Choice was not far away fourth, and then came Rory Mor arid Chopin. The unlucky horses were Admiral Drake and Queen’s Choice. Porangahau Handicap The moderately backed Royal Parade won the open sprint, the Porangahau Handicap, nicely, and as he was not favourite ho paid a good price. He was ridden by the successful Auckland light-weight, M. N. Wiggins, who is having a good seaspn. Kaihoro and Aston were the first to turn for home, but Royal Parade and Head Serang cut them down. Royal Parade won by a length, and Great Charter was a length and a-half away third, and Ashton, Cuticle, Kaihoro and My Own next. ~ Results:— Mangatarata Hurdles, of £130: 13 miles. —1 Rou ex (F. S.
