World’s Fastest Girl
READILY, Stella Walsh, of Cleveland, America’s new woman sprint champion, has j climbed the stairways of athletics I and today she feels that the next natural step is participation in the , 1932 Olympics. Business-like, methodically, just as she works at her job of filing-clerk in the offices of the New York Central Railroad, Stella Has reached the peak ! of physical condition. Stella, who is not yet 19, set a , new world's record for the 220 yd dash reecntly at Philadelphia. Her i
time was 26 4-5, two seconds better than the record. A few days before performing this feat, she set a new world's record in New York for the 50yd dash by sprinting it in 6 seconds flat, 2-5 of a second less than the record. * Stella’s real name isn’t Walsh. That is her track name. She came to America in her mother’s arms from Poland as Stella Walasiewicz. But Walsh makes a better “stage name” and she feels she has as much right to adopt a track name as the American tenors who give themselevs Italian names.
