Glenrossie Scores in the Wanganui Cup

SIR GUY CONSISTENT first day of meeting Special to TIIE SUSJ WANGANUI, Thursday. The Wanganui trotting fixture opened in dull but fine weather, with, however light showers later in the day. some good finishes were witnessed, the attendance being fairly large. The totalizator handled £6.763, as against £8,578 on the first day last year, when eight races were held. Innovation Handicap The Innovation Handicap provided a stirring finish between the favourite, Capilano, and J-.ee Nelson, who was fourth choice. When the field settled doirn Lee Nelson was in front from juggler. Bingen Crest. Short Story and Capilano, this being the order past the stand. Along the back the leader was clear of Bingen Crest, Capilano and Juggler, with Myrtle Dillon moving up from the rear. The favourite ran to second place at the home turn and in a hard finish won by the narrowest margin from Bee A’eison, with Bingen Crest, a promising two-year-old. six lengths away third. Daphne Locanda. Myrtle Billon and Liability were next. Kirkwood Handicap pilot was a good favourite for the Kirkwood Handicap, but never threatened danger. Joy Ride and Blue and i;o!<i went away best, and wero together passing the stand, where Joy Ride broke. She soon settled down again and was handy along the back to Blue and Cold, while several lengths back came Octachord, Kinoro and Peter Eyre. Blue and Gold led Joy Ride into the straight, where the latter challenged, but failed by half a length. Six lengths back came Peter Eyre, just in front of Octachord and Finoro. Eastbrook Handicap Going out smartly in second berth. Harold Bogan trailed Hula Maid for ten furlongs in the Kastbrook Handicap, when he ran to the front to come homo an easy winner from Lady Yvonne, who did not have a good passage early. With half a mile gone Huia Maid led Harold Logan, Lightfoot. Baron Derby and Highland Derby. The latter moved up four furlongs from home, but could not displace the leaders at the bend, where Lady Yvonne became prominent. Harold Logan won comfortably from Lady Yvonne, with Iluia Maid close up, Third, followed by Bonniewah, Highland Derby and Lightfoot. Wanganui Cup The three-year-old Matchlight gelding, Glenrossie, put up an attractive performance by winning the Cup. After beginning well Thomas allowed his charge to lie in third berth, while Zealous made play well clear of Kevinbrae and Bingen Spiers to the halfmile in 1.13. Zealous was still in front ut the mile, reached in 2.23. with Glenrossie following, attended by Richmond Lass, Sir Guy and Hill Top. At the 12-furlong post, reached in 3.33, Zealous began to tire and a furlong later Glenrossie went to the front to lead, well clear of Sir Guy. Great Author (who came from the back with a fine effort), into the home stretch. The three-year-old held on to win easily, but a great finish for second saw Sir Guy beat Great Ajithor bv a short neck, with Logan's Pride fourth. Then came the favourite, All Red, Kevinbrae and Sailor Boy.

Foster’* Saddle Handicap The finish of the Foster’s Saddle Handicap was a thriller. Roldena held a good lead two furlongs from home, but at the bend Short Story was in charge, with Wee Thorpe, Lightfoot, Good Lady and Rita Thorpe all in the picture. Inside the distance Green's bracket, Wee TliorpeLightfoot. were hard at it neck and neck, bit just as the post appeared in view Caddy swept Rita Thorpe up on :he outer, to win by a head from Lightfoot. Wee Thorpe Jvas a head away third, with Good Lady, the favourite, fourth. Short Story and Tawa King were next to finish. Roldina stopped in the straight as if he was shot. President’s Handicap

Bessie Bingen went away smartly in the President’s Handicap, and at fne end of a mile and a-half was well [n advance of the field. She tired uadly in the final half, to finish out of * place. Brian Birfgen was in attendance on Bessie with half a mile ?one, and later on Eva Reta moved up. followed by Joy I tide. Four lurlongs from home Eva Reta broke J n Jr Rangitoro made a forward move, nto the straight Brian Bingen held '-ommand from Joy Ride, and went on r? Wl . n PU-sily by three lengths, with ‘angitero two lengths hack third followed by Eva Reta, Ockley Wood and Bessie Bingen.
