TE AROHA NOTES
HORSES TO RACE AT WAIKATO ANTIQUE LOOKING WELL Special to THE S l .V TE AROHA, Today. There has been quite an exodus ol local horses recently on account of alterations at the course property greatly hampering- training operations. Last week. G. A. Reid transferred his team to Te Rapa, and this week J. H. Wallace followed the lead with Sir Russell. Antique and Belle Star. After the Waikato meeting Mr. Lipscy will make for Paeroa with Grand Arch and Taurimu. Mentors that are satisfied to do sprinting work over short runs will stay on for another three weeks, when it is hoped that proper training facilities will again be available. The local club’s Course Committee is fully alive to the position, and will lose no time bringing course operations back to normal. Bert Hinkler is still running out. and in the meantime is out of commission. Trainer C. Mallowas, however, still has faith in the Quin Abbey gelding, and reckons he will, in time, win hurdle events. Luring the week a probable buyer made an offer for Bert, and is awaiting a reply from the owner. This time last year Indolent won the Huntly Handicap at Te Rapa. This
season ho has not made a name for himself, but his condition has so materially improved of late that it is on the cards the General Latour gelding may prove this on a course where he has already been successful. As a matter of fact his best races have been run at Te Rapa, probably on account of the long straight suiting him. Sir Russell’s Brother J. IT. Wallace has won this season with Sir Russell, Antique and Lucky Alice, and next season may add to the Herriesville stable’s winning total by the aid of the Lucullus—Miss Floss gelding. He is of the sturdy type, has the gift of galloping, and with a good wintering, should get on to the winning list in the spring. Apparently the Wallace stable considers Antique a better stayer than Sir Russell as while Antique has been accepted for in the Storey Memorial Cup, the Archiestown gelding is in tli© President’s Handicap of six furlongs. Both horses are in excellent condition and may run into the money during the meeting. Taumai has not yet resumed strong ; work, but is practically certain to be seen out in hurdle events during the winter. The two-j'ear-old, All Soult, is now thriving on the work allotted him by his owner- trainer, Mr. X. Kinn. He also appears to have settled down better to his work, and consequently may run well at the Waikato meeting. Contingent For Ellerslie Of the local horses entered for the Auckland meeting, Antique, Glenstar, Grand Arch, Potoanui, Ah Wera, Gold Lay and Honiton are fit enough to be considered as probable starters, while the running of The Lamb and Lucky Alice at Te Rapa may go to show whether they are cherry ripe to take on metropolitan racing. Notwithstanding the fact that Ah Wera was a couple of years ago sold cheaply in the Waihou saleyards, and that for a considerable time after performing in the film picture, “Tilly of Te Aroha,” lie was of an excitable nature, but now the St. Amans’ representative is improving in this respect, and he is likely to be successful over country this winter. He is a really good jumper, fast on the flat, and has the attribute of gameness, a factor that so often spells success in racing. Although Volimond is top-weight in the Beerescourt Handicap, of seven furlongs, she may take some beating. Although “off colour” at Paeroa last month she ran prominently up to the last hundred yards. Her present condition should allow her to run out the seven furlongs even if the pace is right on. The stable companion. Honiton, winner of two races at Takapuna in January, is of the hardy nature, and her track work throughout has been consistently good.
