LOST CONFIDENCE

COMMITTEE RESIGNS ACTION AT OTAHUHU Surprise that a body of intelligent men should resign in such a manner. , because their actions had been criti- j cised by other members of the council j was expressed by Cr. Grey at the \ meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Coun- j cil last evening, when notice of the j resignation of the work's committee ' was under discussion. The reason ! given for the resignation was that the j committee felt it had lost the confi- < dence of the council as a whole. The Mayor. Mr. T. Clements, chair- j man of the works committee, said that it was not due to recent criticism that j the committee had taken this step. Cr. Grey asked in what way the j committee considered that they had < lost the confidence of the council. He’i added: “Can any committee play fast and loose, like a lot of children, and resign when they like?” The Mayor: We won’t gain anything by discussing it any further. Cr. Grey asked if the committee had resigned because he had criticised the work* of the foreman. The Mayor assured him that the question was never discussed in con-

nection with tlie resignation. Cr. Trenwitli asked in what way the council had lost confidence in the committee. He failed to see any reason at all, and again asked the Mayor to name one. Cr. Hunter, a late member of the committee, asked permission of the Mayor to give his version of the business, but the Mayor persisted that there was no need to give a reason. On the recommendation of Cr. Grey the resignation was accepted. The Mayor’s proposal that the whole council should be nominated for the committee, and the members be elected by secret ballot, lapsed, and it was agreed to nominate members in open council. The new committee was elected as follows: Mr. T. Clement, Mayor, Messrs. Petrie, Hunter and Graham!
