WORK WANTED
WHAT IS GOVERNMENT DOING? MR. JORDAN’S MESSAGE ! Complaining that unemployment, was still increasing and that nothing has been done to meet the situation, Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau, sent the following telegram to the j Acting-Leader of the Government, the ] Hon. G. W. Forbes, this morning: I “I will be pleased to know definitely j when and what the Government inj tends to do to relieve the suffering among the families of the unemployed. The Hospital Board is doing its best with the money available and the missions are collecting money and goods in an endeavour to feed the hungry and clothe the children. The Labour Bureau states that no work is available. Your Minister repeatedly stated that the matter would be dealt with by the Government, but no satisfactory action has resulted. What has happened to the promise that work would be offered? I am approached by a score of men every day and -want a message of hope for them. You stated in January that ■work for Auckland men would be available through the Labour Bureau and there are as many unemployed now as there were last year. The unemployed and others consider the Labour Bureau is a farce as there is no work available for those that register and attend daily. It is useless to send a reply that the matter is being considered, but I will be obliged if you will send the results of the consideration, as surely you know unemployment exists. If you will telegraph me definitely what the Government is doing I will tell those affected.” „
