PARKING IN CITY
NO ATTENDANTS NEEDED A.A.A. TO REVIEW SYSTEM The view that, in these days of closed motor-cars which can be locked, the system of paid attendants at parking grounds inaugurated by the Auckland Automobile Association three years ago. has become unnecessary, was expressed in a letter received by the council of the A.A.A. last evening. In well-lighted streets the usual police patrol was considered ample. Unfortunately the association controlled the two best parking areas in the city, continued the letter, and it seemed mean to accept the supervision at these places without paying the attendant's fee of one shilling. This was little more than a system of tipping. If the system is to be retained, the writer suggested that it should be withdrawn to less popular areas and be paid for in wages. Personally he considered supervision unnecessary. Members agreed that the system should be revised as a much smaller proportion of the members now require the men’s services, and yet few refused to pay the fee to the attendant. With one exception, all members of the council at the meeting had avoided the official parking area that evening. The scheme is to be considered at a joint meeting of the finance and service committees. , PARKING AT SPEEDWAY UNAUTHORISED GUARDIANS Unauthorised attendants have been collecting fees from motorists who park their cars on the Great North Road when attending the cinder track meetings at Western Springs, according to a letter received by the Council of the Auckland Automobile Association last evening from the Town Clerk. The Legal and Finance Committee of the City Council had considered the question and considered the association might combine with the city’s traffic officers in organising a system similar to that of the other controlled parking areas. The secretary was given power to appoint one or more such attendants.
