ECONOMIC SOCIETY

PAST YEAR'S WORK REVIEWED Valuable work was performed, and a wide range of important subjects was discussed, in a series of lectures during the past year under the auspices of the Auckland branch of the Economic Society of Australia and New Zealand. This statement was made by Mr. W. 11 Cocker, president, to members of the society who attended the annual meeting last evening. He praised the report of the research committee on “Local Body Indebtedness in Xew Zealand,” which he commended to thoughtful members and the public generally for reading. Members, he said, were deeply indebted to Professor H. Belshaw, who had undertaken the bulk of the investigations and compilation of the information. Lectures proposed for the coming season are: "Trusts and Monopolies in Xew Zealand,” “Secondary Industries in Xew Zealand,” “Trade With China and Japan” and “Taxation on Unimproved Values.” The following officers were elected: President, Mr. W. H. Cocker; vicepresidents, Professor H. Belshaw, Dr. E. P. Xeale and Mr. M. Stewart; committee. Professor H. W. Seear, Messrs. T. Bloodworth, F. M. Hills, H. Moldcrness, A. G. Lunn, S. Reid. A. A. Ross and A. M. Seaman; honorary secretary, Mr. H. R. Rodweli; honorary treasurer, Mr. L. W. Holt; honorary auditor, Mr. H. W. Shove. The society voted £5 toward the department of economics of the Auckland University College. The committee was instructed to select a suitable subject for research and to appoint a committee to investigate and report on it.
